Canyon Roofing did a superb job on a complete sheath tear-out & rebuild of my detached, low-slope carport roof, and did so promptly at a very reasonable cost. The office staff was especially professional, responsive & helpful during each step of the process — expertly & patiently fielding a litany of initial questions, streamlining the paperwork, making arrangements for initial roof inspection, scheduling of the work, and wrapping up the contract paperwork upon completion. Communication was excellent during every step. There were no surprises.

Canyon’s technical staff was graciously flexible in their approach, allowing my preference for plywood sheathing over the standard, oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing while informing me of the pros & cons of plywood vs OSB. Although Canyon is one of a few roofers that still offers residential customers an old fashioned, “hot tar” layup as was used on my original roof, I chose a technologically advanced, modified bitumen-type rolled sheet layup that is generally preferred here in Tucson for low slope, residential roofing.

Being an engineer, several technical questions were asked by me during inspection & building of the roof, such as queries about the work approach, the materials to be used in construction, and the performance history of those materials in the Tucson climate. All of these questions were answered clearly & knowledgeably. The followup roofing proposal gave a clear statement of work to be done, the total baseline cost, and the cost of special requested options.

In broad terms, the quality of workmanship done by Canyon’s highly experienced, husband & wife “Team Gonzales” family unit was first-rate. This couple carried out their task with the utmost level of courtesy, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a personal pride rarely seen in today’s slapdash construction that is (regrettably) the norm now in Tucson & elsewhere. There were no shortcuts, use of shoddy materials, or reluctance to answer probing, esoteric technical questions about reroofing practices & processes. I was offered and enthusiastically accepted invitations by Mr. Gonzales to join them on the roof to inspect the completion of each step, to ask questions, and to take my own pics, although Mr. Gonzales carefully photo-documented the entire process from start to finish. Crucial advice was given about future care of the roof and materials to use in its routine maintenance. The work site was always tidy, and the minor yard mess at day’s end was swept-up and disposed of properly at day’s end.

Although the carport roof here was only 450 square feet, the job was not a routine task as the original OSB sheathing was seriously degraded by minor water leaks over the years. All of the ~40 yr old OSB panels needed to be taken out and replaced, thus making the job a multi-faceted carpentry & roofing layup task. Sheath replacement was done in piecemeal fashion by removing an old OSB panel that often came out in ragged pieces. The new plywood panel was custom-fitted to the cleared space with a narrow expansion gap allowance between panels. After expert fitting, the plywood was hand-nailed to the joists, not gun-stapled as done originally. All plywood sheets were of unusual quality as they were the cream of the lot, being personally hand-selected by Mr. Gonzales from the supplier’s stockpile.

A few nails struck hard defects that drove the points off true course, causing them to peek out of the joist. Although peaking nails are typical, Mr. Gonzales insisted on removing & reseating these minor deviants! Such is the difference in work philosophy between a caring pro and a disinterested hack.

The finished roof was a work of beauty. Unlike the old roof that was “soft” and downright springy in spots, the new roof was firm and a joy to walk on with confidence.

Excellent work performed. Worker cleaned up the area ever day before he left for the day. He let us know each day what was going on and showed me the bad planks he was going to replace. My quote I was given was spot on no surprises just great work! I would recommend Canyon Roofing, LLC to anyone looking for great work at an affordable price. Speaking with Melissa in the front office was pleasure. It's good to know this kind of service is still out here.
Thanks for making this repair so easy.

Unlike other roofing company’s we’ve used previously, Canyon Roofing has been a pleasure to work with. They’re reasonably priced, efficient and do a great job as well as being responsive to questions or concerns.

The crew arrived on August 15th
Following day, I noticed roofing tar on my garage door. I shared pictures of this with Brad. It never got cleaned. As this is an east facing door, I decided I needed to clean it myself after a few days of it baking in the sun so to avoid it drying further.
I was told that the crackling sound when stepping on the old roof boards was normal and they did not require replacing. This was contrary to what 7 other contractors had assessed prior to the work. Perhaps they did not need replacing but it also was apparent to me that the aim of the job crew was to get in and get out as fast as possible. While there were some occasional weather delays, there were 8 straight days of sunshine in which the roof remained 1/2 coated. When alerting Brad to this, his response was surprise as he thought the job was done. I spoke with the foreman on two occasions, requesting that we walk the finished job with the bid in hand and check off line by line. As I am not a roofer, I have no proof that some items were even completed and wanted to verify by him showing me. He told me he read the bid and doing a walk through was not necessary. The first item on the bid was to remove and discard satellite dish. It was not done by the original crew. So, it was obvious that he did not read the bid. The sky lights were smattered with tar spots and streaks which took several weeks to get cleaned after making numerous requests. After the job was finally completed in early September, Brad told me that he would send a senior inspector out to go over everything after I once again texted him about my concerns. When I was called to make payment, I reminded them that a senior inspection was promised. Freddy came out the following week and we walked the job. He found several items needing tending and told me that someone would call to schedule the work. On October 5th, I texted Brad inquiring about this work. That afternoon, they called me to schedule the repairs. On October 9th, nearly two months after starting, the job was completed. The administration staff is very friendly. I would not recommend using this company and leaving voice mails for Brad is futile as he will not return calls.

EDIT: 10/18/2023
Adding one more star. Shortly after posting the above review, I was contacted via phone call by the office manager who had been unaware of any the above going’s on. Canyon Roofing was quite surprised and upset at this poor rating and asked what they could do to make it right. Since that phone call, they have retuned to the property and completed subsequent repairs and conveyed to me that they will do everything in their power to make this very unfortunate situation right. They have also informed me that prior to the review being posted, the sub-contractor who performed the initial work has since been let go. There were additional issues identified by Canyon Roofing on the roof and these were rectified as well.
I was asked by Canyon Roofing to remove this review. I was told that perhaps the credit card fee ($296) associated with the total charge ($9920) for the work could be refunded as compensation for all my trouble. This offer was from the office manager but not agreed upon by the owner Brad. I was told he would not refund money or pay someone who left a bad review. I do not think this review is bad or good but rather an honest one. My hopes are that Canyon Roofing and the owner, Brad, will learn and grow from this unfortunate experience and better vet their future sub-contractors.

Absolutely awesome folks. From the estimate process to completion these guys were wonderful. We had a very delicate situation because we have a large tree in the front where we have an owl who has lived there for years. These folks took all measures to not disrupt the owl. Always showed up and worked very hard. Love these guys and gals. Great company.
