Charlie Mae's Soul Food reviews
20 I've driven by here many times and always wanted to stop in and try it. Finally I did. What really drew me in was the fact that they had peach cobbler on the menu. So a friend of mine and I walk in, about a quarter of their menu is covered over with signs that say this item is out. So ignoring those we started trying to order. My friend tried getting the meatloaf, they didn't have that. He ended up getting a hamburger which is not what I look for in a soul food place. I had a shrimp po-boy. It was very tasty although not very packed. The lunch specials come with what you order a small side and a can of soda. Well I tend to drink a lot when I eat so when my can ran out less than halfway through my meal I got up and asked the gentleman for a glass of water. He said oh I'm going to have to charge you for that. I said what? He goes yeah we have to charge for the cup. I said how much is that? $2.95. That was it for me. $3 for a glass of water. I don't see this place making it very long. Oh and to top everything off, they were out of the peach cobbler. Will I be going back here, absolutely not. The only reason I gave it three stars is because the food that we actually did get was tasty.
And now they're out of business. Big shock!
Only thing missing was corn bread from scratch for the greens and dressing. The smothered chicken thigh was the best I've had besides my own. Period. Tender beyond belief. Greens had a nice kick. The Mac meh. Opt for the Mac upgrade.
The kool aide amazing the lemonade even better, the food let me tell you the catfish sandwich was huge and delicious nice and crispy with a nice piece of fish, the meatloaf is super flavorful, the loaded mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese and cornbread were all super delicious definitely will be back
I I was picking up a GrubHub order comes out with the customers or through the bag on the counter. I just walked out laughing like dang girl like was that necessary but she had attitude just cause you’re having a bad day taking it out on the customers reason that ladies making money is the custom
The nicest service. The food was good; the taste was regional, not quite universal, which can be good to eat. Portions were satisfactory. No complaints and worth a try for sure.
The food was so delicious. The burnt chips were out of the world and the corn bread was to die for was my first time ever try and collard greens and I love them so much I couldn’t get enough of them. The staff is so nice and the mashed potatoes and gravy was delicious. 10 out 10
Operates as Dirty Burger too on Grubhub. Owner would not let me use the restroom. I was delivering for his restaurant for Grubhub and shouldn't be denied the restroom on my wait 10 minutes waiting for the food to be finished. It's inhumane behavior, shame on you.
This company is kinda a sham. They operate under multiple names on Ubereats and Postmates as vegan but they are not a vegan eatery. If you think you're ordering vegan burger on a food delivery service from this place, it's NOT VEGAN.it's cooked right alongside meat with no care or disclosure. And in those sham vegan offerings they put meat and dairy products too.
Avoid if you're a vegan or vegetarian.or just want to avoid supporting a company that operates like this.
Food is absolutely fantastic! I’ve ordered something different every time I’ve been, never been disappointed once! Service is always outstanding as well. 10/10 best soul food in Phoenix!
Today was my first time coming here. The food was amazing and the service was wonderful. And the lemonade was the best I ever had. I will definitely be back again.
This place is no longer open on Bethany Home and 19 th Ave, and for good reason, the food is ok but not great for the prices.
Not sure what everyone else is talking about but i’m from the south and this food brings me right back home! She cooks the food fresh, in house and always has a smile. What more do you guys want from her? It’s great food! Come and eat it or order elsewhere and miss out on an amazing experience. Thanks so much for the food and kindness! Even the to go plates were perfect!
Cabbage was over cooked and to salty to eat. Chicken was salty too but ate most not going back
Ms. Lori was impeccable customer service! Exceptional tasting food! You want soul food? RUN HERE!
Food was good, personally feel like it was a tad over priced, portions were great, Mac and cheese was sub par, it had a weird after taste.
Ghetto services. The Owner was super rude! Don’t recommend anyone coming here! This lady is mad at life and takes it out on her customers.
Honestly just a family owned, home made food experience! Everything I tasted was an absolute banger, totally coming back again soon
Don’t go here it’s not good Don’t disappoint your self and get mad Wasting your money with him food is not good here
I really don't have nothing nice to say about this joint. A small hole in the wall with no atmosphere! It literally took them 3 hours to prepare my family order and it was served on paper plates with plastic fork and roll paper towel, from what look like the dispenser at McDonald's. Food was served warm cold and the cakes are boxed oil and water mix.but the biggest problem was when my brother paid for the food with his debit card, the waitress said she gave the card back and never did.so we wasted another 30 minutes looking for his card, only when I started to press her and made her retrace her moves, then she all of a sudden found it in the back kitchen area! I asked why was it in the back when the cash register is up front! This was THE worst experience I ever had at any restaurant, I strongly would not EVER recommend this place!
Went here and a very different experience than from years ago. Prices were quite high compared to 7-10 years ago. No inside seating anymore, which for summer time would not seem enjoyable.
And the staff was mexican or native, for a soul food spot, especially one of the few in the city, I would have felt the experience more with the culture of food being presented by the same culture of people, strictly for the effect.no racial meaning to it.
If a Mexican restaurant had the face of the restaurant which is based on authentic Mexican food, as a African American, the experience would not feel so authentic for a mexican customer.
I am from the South so it missed the southern appeal it had when I came many years before.
Unfortunately I came for the appeal over the food, so I didn't buy because the appeal was gone and the prices were high in my eyes.
Sorry Charlie Mae's you might win some, but you just lost one!
