Lava River Cave reviews
28This place is amazing. One of the little spots in the Flagstaff area that you just shouldn't pass up. It takes about 15 mins on the dirt road to get to it. If it's been raining you LL encounter mud and puddles in the parking lot. The cave itself is great. You can take any all here and I did take my border collie but the entrance can be difficult for a pet. The entrance is sloped down and littered with good sized rocks, many of which are slick. Watch your head and bring a light!
Easy cave for a wide variety of ages but everyone needs to be able to negotiate climbing up, down, and over rocks. Two things, always bring several sources of light and watch your head. Numerous times I've seen someone stuck with a dying flashlight and/or a head injuries that needed rescuing. Although easy, the ground is mostly uneven; people with knee or ankle problems find the 3/4 mile long cave trail extremely uncomfortable. We'll worth adding this adventure to your Northern Arizona trip.
Great place to visit and cool off if it is hot outside. I have been there a few times, but it is usually very crowded in the summer. Beautiful lava tube, but the amount of people brings the rating down. Out of courtesy for other people please do not vape or play loud music in the cave.
A unique experience for many. This is a super accessible, BIG, lava tube. Low ceiling at entrance but, opens up to be wide and tall fairly quickly. Wear good shoes and watch your step, bring a good headlamp.
Cool hike. Bring head flashlights, you need your hands for balance. Jeans and real shoes a must, long sleeve shirt a good call.about 60 degrees inside. About 1.5 hours for a full in and out hike. There are 3 tighter passages between rooms, at 5'8" 200, they were fairly easy for me, but my Dad turned around.
Highly recommend if you want to take a cool stroll while keeping your beers properly chilled. Next time, I’ll bring gloves to help navigate the chilly rocks, especially on the way down.
Felt like a journey to the center of the earth. This is a must do experience! Bring a light sweater or jacket as it's always 45° in the cave. Headlamp is a must to be hands free while hiking through narrow areas. Shoes with grip are better for those occasional wet stones you'll be climbing over. For those that are claustrophobic, the initial entry is a little intimidating but as you get within a few minutes, it opens up
