Mako Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tucson reviews
20 I went to this dojo thinking they trained karate. Turns out they do Mexican Ground Wrastlin’… or as others would call it “Jiu-Jitsu. ”
I was really looking forward to smashing boards and cracking skulls like in the 1988 American classic movie, Bloodsport, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Instead we did these things called “shrimps. ”
After the warm up we learned how to choke a man unconscious with his OWN attire. That’s when I was like “hell yeah. ” So I signed up. Best choice I ever made.
Dropped in at this gym last week while visiting Tucson and it is every bit as good as the previous 127 five star reviews on here.
EXCELLENT instruction in both the fundamentals and advanced class - I took away so many of those small details that make such a big difference. Lots of great training partners that make you feel welcome and challenge you at the same time. A great place to drop in and an even better place to train full time!
Family was passing through Tucsan, and my wife and I dropped in for a Wednesday night class. GREAT environment and very welcoming. I would train here agian any day.
Training at Mako Jiu-Jitsu every winter is an absolute blast! It's an incredible place with awesome vibes. The rolls are top-notch, and the folks there are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a fantastic training experience! "
A very welcoming and fun environment. It was my first time trying BJJ and the instructors made me feel at ease. Definitely going again!
This is an amazing place to learn Jiu jitsu with great instructors. Perfect for fitness, self defense and being part of a BJJ community.
Me and my little family started in around may/june 2023. Coming from another gym, we were welcomed with open arms. And felt right at home the coaches made sure of that. My son is in the kids class and loves being there.
Kids class is growing and has so many talented kids. Ages ranging from 4-15 yrs. I started in august 2023 and although there isn’t many women in class the girls who I’ve made friends with are amazing and I feel like part of the family!
I percent recommend this academy!
MAKO is an excellent location to facilitate both physical and mental growth for adults and children. The level of knowledge the staff possesses is incredible. Highly recommend MAKO
From out of town and dropped in for a class. I was treated like family. Great environment for training and will return in the future.
My kids love it. The instructors are great. I look forward to starting myself. Update: I started myself and I love it too. The community here is amazing! The shared knowledge, world class black belts and intergration with wrestling makes Mako fun challenging, and always keeps you progressing.
Great people and incredible technique all the time. A wonderful place for people across the board.
Highly recommended all the coaches (especially coach Mike and coach Ivan) are amazing people everyone is very nice and it feels nice to talk and get to know everyone there you should try it, it is very welcoming in the gym and I love it I hope you do too
My kid is so happy she wants to go here and may like it I said it was not gonna be easy she didn’t care
I was in Tucson from out of town and i reached out to Ivan who showed great hospitality while i visited Mako BJJ. Everyone on the mats was very friendly and training was great! Will definitely look to visit them again.
Mako BJJ is a fantastic school. My family and I were going to be in Tucson for about a month and I was looking for a school so that my kids could keep up their skills while they were away from their regular BJJ school. I also wanted to take classes myself as I just recently began my own journey in BJJ. I read tons of reviews for BJJ schools in Tucson and ultimately called Mako because of their amazing reviews and the fact that many of those great reviews were from other visiting students looking for a place to train while in Tucson. Well, I called Mako and my call was answered by Mike, the lead instructor at the school. He was super friendly, helpful and encouraging. When we finally arrived in Tucson, both my kids and I attended a handful of classes. Everyone we met at Mako was extremely friendly and welcoming. The instructors are all top notch and really great at what they do. My kids really loved Coach Ivan in their kids’ classes. My own personal highlight was getting to roll with Coach Mike himself, which I truly appreciated and was a cool, humbling and enlightening experience. I only wish we had time to attend more classes, but our schedule was pretty full. We have family in Tucson and it’s nice to know we have such a high quality and welcoming place to train when we visit.
Love this gym. This is my go-to gym when I visit Tucson. The coaches are patient, helpful and fun in both the kids classes and the adult classes. The students and staff are super inviting and welcoming! Plus, they show some real nifty techniques
If I could give 10 stars for Mako, I without a doubt would! My son started his jiu-jitsu path in Colorado and we absolutely loved his coach and gym there. We moved to AZ and I was dreading having to find a new gym and starting all over. We toured and watched a class at two gyms prior to finding Mako. Leaving both feeling very disappointed that nothing would compare to his old gym, we decided to give one more gym a chance before making our decision. And hallelujah we did! The moment we stepped into Mako it felt like home. We watched a class then immediately signed up! It was the best decision ever. The coaches are SOOOOO incredible with the kids. They provide just the right amount of discipline, fun, encouragement, and knowledge.
Stop searching and join Mako today! You will not be disappointed! We found our jiu-jitsu family and will be forever grateful! You will be too!
I had been wanting to get my son in BJJ but none of the gyms were a good fit until we visited Mako. Coach Ivan and his staff have been amazing and accommodated my sons sensory needs.
I was recently in Tucson over the 4th of July weekend and was dying to get some training in. I looked up bjj gyms and found Mako 5 minutes from where I was staying. I dropped in to an open mat session and was greeted by Coach Ivan (co-owner). I was welcomed and shown great hospitality for two different training sessions. The members were super friendly and provided great training and rolls. It’s clear they’ve created and cultivate a healthy gym community for visitors, novices, and experienced bjj players can learn and train.
I visited Mako BJJ while visiting from out of town. I contacted them and got a quick response back from Mike. He was very accommodating and welcomed me to drop in. I attended two classes the next day and I will be reaching out to them again next time I am in the area. Everyone on the mats was very friendly and many went out of their way to approach me and introduce themselves. Great competitive rolls, and the full spectrum of skill on the mat. If you're looking for a solid place to train that has a lot to offer, I highly recommend Mako.
