Shogun Japanese Restaurant reviews
17It's a great small local sushi place. I love the ala carte options. And it serves 2 pieces for each order. I love that. It was yummy. Everything was fresh, and they have specials daily. Some rolls are half off, so that's also a great deal. It was a nice experience. Fast with preparing. Great service. Look forward to enjoying this place again
Only get Sashimi or nigiri here! I do not recommend, I repeat I do not recommend any of their rice dishes or even their rolls! Atmosphere definitely needs to be updated. Service was fine. Wish they did not have a break in the day between lunch and dinner.
The food and the atmosphere were fantastic and I would return for that. However our server, Sam, admitted that she added a 20% gratuity out of her own volition due to the check being over $100 and it being a slow night.
I'll start this review with a caveat: I love this place and have for many years for both quality and sentimental reasons.
The reason I am giving 3 stars is cleanliness. There is years of neglected areas that need attention. In the front windows there is dust, dead bugs and random junk that has built up between the windows and decorative paper. The interior also has long term build up issues. In the private booths. Grime in all the ledges & creases. The floors need deep cleaning. The ceiling could use attention as well. The entire place needs a serious deep clean. It seems at though only light clean up like table wipes & vaccum/mopping have been done. There were also flies pestering us while we ate yesterday
All that being said. I've been here 3 times in 2022 & probably 20 times over the last.idk 15 years? The food is always excellent, the service is always good, & I love the novelty of sitting in the private booth.
Sho-gun I've always considered you a high quality place. The decline in appearance has taken time. I truly hope you don't take offense & make the effort to refresh your place.
Best sushi in Tucson. Always fresh, great prices and good service I never go to any other sushi place in Tucson. Been coming here for over 10 years now.
2023 update: over the past couple of years, the service got even better than it was, food is prepared quickly and there are some more drink options as well. Still my favorite sushi restaurant in Tucson.
A hidden gem for Japanese food. 1/2 off sushi rolls each day. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are when I go for the selected 1/2 off rolls. Salmon Kama is my favorite "go to " appetizer, yummy!
One might think there are no good restaurants between Tucson and San Diego, but recently we found Sophia’s on the main drag through Gila Bend. What a treat! This casual restaurant makes some of the best home style Mexican food anywhere. I love the carnitas tacos. The sopapillas are most amazing. Make sure you save room for them. And they also have Churros, which are so good as well
Best sushi I have in Tucson. Salmon is always fresh and fatty (and they always give you extra, even though the original piece is so big and thick already). The toro and o-toro are must-have when available. The vinegar rice fits the sashimi to a T, the acidity and viscosity are just prefect. Impeccable! I go there almost once a week for three years.
The food tasted like it was frozen and then cooked because the veggie fried rice tasted strongly of preserved veggies, and every meat dish I ordered besides sushi had tough overcooked meat that was not palatable. The servers only came to check on us to get our order and give us our meals, I had to go walk to the front to ask for to-go boxes and a bag. There was one guy who helped our server who was also a bit curt when serving and getting our orders. I also ordered a dessert and was told at the very end of my meal that they actually didn't have that dessert in stock, so they fixed my check to remove it after letting me know. My entire order also came out to about $150, which was not worth the experience I had with my family. The only thing good about it was the interior design and the fact that they have sectioned off tables in small rooms, like they have in some areas in Japan, which is more unique compared to other Japanese restaurants I've been to in Tucson.
The only thing I can recommend from this place is their miso soup, sushi, and sashimi.
Based of my visit today, you should only get sushi at this restaurant as it is fresher.
The beef in the teppan was so overcooked that the meat was charred. The meat was far over "well done", it was like bit into an eraser.
The waiter told us "yeah this is freshly made" despite the food being inedible
Vegetables taste either frozen or canned, there is a distinct after taste.
A total rip off at 25 dollars.
What a happy accident! We originally intended on dennys but spotted this in the corner. I knew walking in the door this would be a gem. The water fountain is calming touch. And everything we ate was next level. We ordered another round.
Sushi was outstanding! If you are in a hurry.this isn't the restaurant for you. If you want quality food and exceptional sushi.definitely stop in. First time eating here.it is now favorite sushi in Tucson. Portions are huge and fresh. 5 stars.only rated 4 for service because it took quite awhile to get served
I have coming to this fine establishment for over 6 years and I have to say the atmosphere and staff make it the best sushi restaurant in town
Our first time there. Beautiful and great place to eat. Beautiful arrange plate and delicious. Thank you. We enjoyed our lunch.
NEW EDIT: Previously a place I really liked but service was SO AWFUL, that it simply has to be commented on.
The other day we were subjected to maybe one of the single worst experiences in a restaurant I have had in a long time. We arrived at 7: 45 PM, 1 hr 15 to closing. The staff were abysmal- they were constantly badmouthing each other, barely paying attention to their tables. One guy kept insisting he be closed out for his tips, pestering other servers. He then took another server's tips lmao! And YES I could hear every word these dumb jokers were saying. They brought out each part of the meal at a snail's pace. 30 minutes for the miso soup, another 20 for appetizers. My partner's appetizers were burnt to a crisp. Only her sashimi and SOME of her sushi were intact. When her volcanoes came out THEY WERE ALSO COMPLETELY BURNED. But, hey, at least they were gracious enough to take that off our tab. Still cost us 92 dollars tho.oh, and my bento box? It got to my table at about 8: 50, ten minutes before closing time. We had been there OVER AN HOUR
In conclusion, we were served by a bunch of whiney children in serious need of some basic lessons in customer service. Abysmal. My partner was too nice, she gave tip. I would have given none.
Food is pretty good here and we enjoy it every time we go. The half price sushi is a great idea as well. This is a place you definitely want to try. The staff has always been friendly every time we visit here as well.
I have been going to shogun for about 20 years now. Back when Pac-san was slinging sushi. Place has held its integrity ever since. I recommend this to anyone in Tucson. It is the best sushi at an amazing prices. Check it out
