Willcox Playa Wildife Area reviews
14Free camping 7 days. There are usually thousands of sandhill cranes in this area till March 23rd.but unfortunately I got there to late.
This is a real gem in the Willcox area! Peaceful walking for a mile or 10+ miles, it's up to you. Wonderful place to be.
Trail leads to a viewing bench that is more than a mile away from the water with signs saying not to walk out to the water. Not sure how you see any birds, unless you bring some pretty expensive gear that can see a long ways. Also this is supposed to be a hunting area and not sure how you can hunt if you can't get to the water.
We hiked all the way out. No water and no birds. We also went to rucker lake today which was not a lake. One of those days.
No water in lake=no Sandhill cranes. I assume they did not fill the lake due to drought. So if your going there to see cranes, dont expect to see any.
No cranes at the viewing area, and the trail is not very interesting on its own. We had better luck at Whitewater Draw.
Free overnight parking and a nice 2.4 mile round-trip hike out to a sandhill crane viewing area. Didn't see any but it was still well worth it.
Come for paired to walk over a mile to get there from the parking area. Can be extremely hot and dry most days. No staff on site. No fees.
We are in 35 foot rv and we fit. Not much here there is a 2.4 mile trail here to walk around playa.
We stopped here for a few hours to get some rest. There were LOTS of flies.and they bite! On a busy 2 lane road so it's kinda noisy.
A long walk to the viewing area.
But was there for the fly in. Saw many many Sandhill cranes fly low over our head on their way to bed for the night.
I came here to camp. It is free, but I disagree with other reviewers that it is quiet. If you don't mind highway type traffic all night long - where are these people (big trucks) going between midnight and 6 am? - then it might be ok for you. I will not return, at least to camp.
One of several good places to see thousands of sandhill cranes flocking in the winter. Don't bother with the so-called viewing "platform", especially if it's muddy.
You may or may not see cranes. The trail is flat for the most part. The trail itself is 2.4 miles round trip.
