24 Hour Fitness, San Diego CA

This is unfortunately one of the worst 24 hour locations despite it having so much potential. It does not get cleaned, the sauna and steam room smell so bad I can smell it from inside the locker rooms and there’s mold everywhere. I’ve tried it out multiple times in hopes that it would get better, but I can’t go back anymore.

Decent 24 hour with a nice functional area. Solid weights. Nice hot sauna. I wish the weights area was a bit bigger

This gym is nicer than LA fitness. The only thing I would change is to put back one or more of the heavybag/boxing bags, which someone broke. It was the main reason I left my old gym. I have driven to almost every other 24hr to use this, but this location is missing one.

It's a really nice gym. Lots of equipment. I like the fact that it's a huge open area. The only bad thing is that it's SUPER crowded at times. There's another 24 up the hill, but most people come to this one because it's newer and nicer.

What is it going to take for the staff to do something about people who sit on the machines and play on their phones? I have brought this up before and nothing has happen. People sit on the machines and play on phones with no regard to other people who are waiting to use the machine. When I brought it up to the staff at the front desk, they just looked at me and went back to their conversation among themselves. On three different occasions in the past two weeks, I have counted 7 to 9 people sitting at the machines on their phones, not doing their sets. Management needs to come out of their offices and start paying attention to what's happening on the floor.

I pay an extra $20/mo to the regular membership fee. For that I get to workout in a filthy gym. These pictures are only a fraction of the grime members are exposed to. If I end up catching some sort of infection, either through contact or breathing in black mold spores, I’ll be sure to send my medical bills to management. Oh but wait. Why would I expect them to pay if they can’t even keep their place clean? If you can’t be trusted with the little things, then you can’t be trusted with the big things.
The women’s locker room and steam room are unbelievable, especially the showers. The smell of old and dirty laundry is great. I can’t imagine how the men’s locker room is. Eeek. The external single bathroom stinks of urine and reminds me of my days traveling in the NY subway. The stench is exacerbated by the urine stains on the floor around the toilet which seem to be a permanent thing.
Being the newest gym in the area I don’t understand why it’s the dirtiest. Both Escondido locations and even the old one down the road seem to put an effort in the maintenance of their public hygiene. Seems like a simple concept. Why is this place so dirty all the time? To management: aren’t you embarrassed that the gym you supposedly run is in this state? Good job you!

Jan 01,2024 update: it's been noticeably cleaner here the last 3 visits. I hope it continues.

Dec 2023.the saddest thing about these reviews is the condescending reply from "Management" about how important it is to them to provide a clean gym. Really? How many reviews do you need to tell you the same thing over and over again? Day after day, week after week and month after month. How long does it take to tell your employees to clean the place? How long does it take to get some new management in here to lead by example?

This gym was at its best when Simon was the manager in 2020/2021. He led by example every day. He cleaned himself and expected no less from his team. He kept a positive attitude, spoke to all the members and was prompt in making repairs and being hands on.

I really can't blame the staff. I blame the gym management, the district management and corporate management. Staff take their lead from management. This gym is 5 or 6 years old and the current condition is a shame for something that new.

Please do me a favor by NOT responding to this review. Instead use that time to clean the gym.any part of it. Take your pick.

There’s an Asian chic that works the front desk who looks like she hates everyone. She tried to turn me away from a 3 day guest pass because I was a gym member back in 2022. On their personal Carmel Mountain site, their policy said you can have a 3 day pass as long as you haven’t been a member for the past 6 months. I pointed it out to her, she tried to argue and make me go to the PQ location. She even told me”it’s not an official policy it’s a verbal agreement amongst staff”. Eventually she just gave up and only gave me a ONE day pass. No management to contact either. I kinda felt bad for her though, she must have some miserable issues going on.

I am member for 2 years, some of the employees rude, disrespectful and mean. It was 11: 45 pm I was there to pay my yearly membership, an employee was playing with his phone I was waiting in front of Him standing without help. When he started the application, and there was incoming call he kept his self busy talking with other side of the line. I was waiting right in front of him for almost 20 minutes.

I hope the management take care of the rude employees.

It’s service job, if one can’t handle it, better to not be there

I was excited when they first built this location. But now it's lacking. Not a fan of the Hoist equipment. They need to re-apholster the seats and other parts that are coming apart. Some of their equipment don't have smooth movement. The bathroom showers have mildew. The steam room and sauna smell and patrons don't take off their shoes when going in so they track all their dirt inside despite having the signs on the doors. The fans are way too high during late night when there's barely anyone there. Someone sneezed the other night and didn't cover their mouth and you know the rest. I usually ride my EUC to other locations and they usually let me bring it in to post it inside but this location won't allow it.

This place used to be ok in the past 2 years this place has gone from bad to worse it’s changed management 2 times and every time it just gets worse and worse. They have a bunch of unhappy people working there just looking miserable. It’s also dirty and they have no idea what they are doing or have any good customer service. What a shame it’s a nice gym but could be better.

So I like this location but the steam room smells awful like mildew and I'm afraid of getting sick, literally it looks like the showers have never been cleaned ever.and my biggest complaint is someone broke the punching bag and now who knows when we will get another one. I don't want to go to another location, I like this location, but everyone who goes here doesn't like how unclean the facility is and how the equipment doesn't get fixed or replaced.at least 3 of the treadmills have some kind of problem rendering them unusable.personally I just want the punching bag back and to be able to use a sanitary steam room without feeling like I'm going to catch pneumonia standing inside! Or to take a shower and wash my sweat without feeling like I'm going to catch hepatitis!

This is by far terribly managed. When unhappy management never returns calls and most gym associates are often rude and leave you on a excessive hold. Refunds are unheard of, respect is unheard of. Trainings is good if you have previous gym experience but don't expect coaching or help with trying to learn for yourself so you never have to ask again. Interested in collecting your money and keeping it that' s all this place is with rude, and neglectful arrogant behavior.

I was visiting family from out of town and I wanted to get a work out but didn't have a membership. They sold me a day pass and it was totally worth it, did some running, weights, sauna and finished off with a couple laps in the pool.

When this location first opened, I would give it 5 Stars. It is slowly becoming like it's sibling gym 1 mile away in Rancho Penasquitos. Treadmill plastic front has layers of dust. Men's bathroom, especially the urinals and sinks, are disgusting. Need to straddle urinal to avoid stepping in urine.

I go workout about 3x weekly and have never seen the bathroom cleaned or in clean condition.

In the past I was member of Chuze in Rancho Bernardo and LA Fitness in 4S Ranch. Both facilities, especially Chuze was always clean. Their staff went around hourly cleaning. At 24 Hour Fitness, staff only concerned in new members and private lessons. Cleaning, meh, who needs that? !

I can see that in a few years, this once nice location will be as dirty and old as its Penasquitos sibling gym. And for $40, or whatever other members pay for Super Sport, we should expect and get better than a gas station bathroom and dirty equipment.

That said, the gym is spacious and lots of equipment, which is step about Chuze and LA Fitness. But the cleanliness for me is an issue and my guess is that in time I need to change clubs because of the yuk factor that is slowly creeping in.

The Good:
Lots of equipment but gets crowded during week from about 5 pm - 7 pm.

The Bad:
Men's bathroom is disgusting. Smells and never seen it clean or anyone cleaning it. Always smells like piss and floor yellow from it in front of urinals. And all kind of debris can be in urinals. I look up at ceiling when I can't hold it any longer and have to make the dreaded trek to bathroom. Lots of posts here about dirty bathroom and seems the management and staff could care less.

In terms of staff, they seem to do a lot of gossiping, talking to each other. And there are often several of them working but not one of them vacuums or cleans. They seem to only sign up new members.

Decent gym, decent value, and friendly people and staff. However, the men's bathroom is kinda gross. The area near the urinals needs to be mopped more often. Also, there's usually a small wait to get a squat rack and cables during peak hours. It's be great if they could fit additional equipment to reduce wait times.

This place is disgusting!
If the locker room, a place that is required to be kept clean looks like this, imagine the filth on the machines people are working out on.

-Floors that used to be cleaned daily no longer see a mop or any form of disinfectant.
-Showers that won’t drain leaving standing water that leaks into the locker room
-YES, THAT IS CLUMPS OF HAIR ON THE FLOOR AND WALL
-Ceiling vents that haven’t been touched in months!
-Mold growing on the walls and soap descender!
-Soap scum everywhere!

What are we paying for, wasn’t this place billed as a “special club” don’t we pay more to go to this club VS others.
A Clean locker room and gym should be a given.

Equipment and facility are great, the only issue the men's shower stalls are nasty there is black mold building on the walls and even though I contacted 24 hours corporate they have NOT done anything. Also the men's toilet many of times are nasty they also need to be cleaned. And the steam room needs cleaning at the walls as well. The janitor in this place is not doing the job, too bad.
