I have fond memories visiting here as a child. I would unreservedly recommend a visit to anyone inclined to experience forest monastic Buddhism.

Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery is a peaceful and serene place to practice the teachings of the Buddha in the Thai Forest Tradition. The monastery is located in Redwood Valley, California, surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife. The monks and nuns who live there are very friendly, humble, and inspiring. They offer daily meditation, chanting, and Dhamma talks, as well as retreats, workshops, and special events throughout the year. The monastery also has a library, a bookstore, and a website where you can find many resources on Buddhism.
I visited Abhayagiri for a weekend retreat and I was amazed by the hospitality and generosity of the community. They provided delicious vegetarian food, comfortable accommodation, and warm guidance. The atmosphere was very conducive to meditation and reflection. I learned a lot from the teachings of the senior teachers, especially Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Nyaniko, who have decades of experience in the monastic life. They shared their wisdom and insights with humor and compassion. I also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with other practitioners who came from different backgrounds and walks of life.
I highly recommend Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery to anyone who is interested in Buddhism or looking for a spiritual refuge. It is a rare gem in the modern world, where you can experience the authentic and ancient tradition of the forest monks. It is a place where you can cultivate mindfulness, morality, and wisdom, and discover the true happiness that lies within your own heart.

Wonderful Buddhist Monastery in Redwood Valley, near Ukiah in California. It’s about 2.5 hours drive from San Francisco. Ajahn Pasanno, the abbot of Abhayagiri Monastery, he was the abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat International Forest Monastery in Northeast Thailand. Then, in the late 1990s, he moved to California to head this new monastery. Abhayagiri is situated in the forest. It’s quiet and very peaceful. The monks speak English, some can speak Thai. The monks here are very nice and knowledgeable about Buddhism. Also, people there are super nice. There are events like, meditation retreats you can attend.
