Academy Museum of Motion Pictures reviews
20Excellent staff that provide stellar customer service, in the gift shop, as well as museum. The screening rooms have the best screens and sound systems in Southern California (and that's saying a LOT with so many entrainment venues nearby). Weirdly, the seating and appointments to the viewers are strangely lacking - in the largest screening room, you need to go to a different building to find restrooms, and the seats and rows are.okay, but definitely not the first priority in either of the screening rooms.
Must do in LA! One of the best museums I have ever done. A lot of 'wow' moments with inside info from the movie industry
Film lovers, this is the place for you! This is one of the most fascinating museums I've ever been to. You can feel the love for film at every turn, between the in-depth features from directors like Orson Welles to the history of Academy Awards shows and many opportunities to see costumes, hair, and some favourites like R2-D2! Make sure to allot at least 2-3 hours for your visit, but you could probably stay longer just taking it all in. Highly recommended.
Visited due to a friend's free tickets so did not have to line up. The exhibits were pretty interesting but my favorite was the animation one. It was fun seeing the first sketches of animations I watched and how they differ from what was the finalized version. It was also interesting to learn and see the Academy Awards and the darker sides of cinema (racist portrayals).
We spent a very enjoyable full day at the museum, with lunch and a mid-afternoon snack at Fanny’s. The exhibits are great and the building is very beautiful Renzo Piano architecture. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace.
Very boring place. Lots of wide open hallways and not much in the rooms. Mostly videos of old movies that you can see on you tube. One room with costumes was cool.
The members-only line was slowed down by people joining. Took a long time, and that's basically the only member's perk. Still have to reserve a time, so you can't go on the spur of the moment. Restaurant is extremely poorly organized and the "staffing issues" excuse is like a mantra. Museum itself is nice enough but the organization of it isn't cohesive and the various sections aren't clearly identified as to what they may contain. Just go into any door you see, and there is usually something interesting inside-but you know what it is until you go in.
Many exhibits, lots of different interests. Props, scripts, costumes, and loads of video content. Did not find getting Oscar experience a good value. You do get to hold a blank Oscar.
Seems like it could get very busy. Recommend going early. Can be a very engaging place if you are into Oscar winners. Caution, many spoilers!
This was a fun museum to stop by! I especially enjoyed seeing the costume exhibit and the exhibit about animation. It was a meaningful visit for me and very enjoyable!
Overpriced and mediocre museum in a bland grey concrete building. A random display of screens and posters. Boring. Where is the magic of Hollywood?
Close to the popular La Brea Tar Pits, this new museum both celebrates the film-making industry in all of its facets and takes you behind the scenes enough to feel fresh & original. Great for a family or a quiet afternoon wondering through its many exhibits.
I wasn't too sure but was tagging along with a huge Oscars fan - low and behold! What a phenomenal museum - I couldn't walk away from the acceptance award speeches - i sat through every one - just phenomenal!
A bit underwhelming with a fee of the movie exhibits. The Sci Fi room with a few cool costumes like R2D2 and Cp30, and some cool Disney nostalgia made it interesting
Also the animation/animation room was interesting. Oscar room was fun with notable speeches and some history. Beautiful outside patio for picture taking. One can see Hollywood sign and mountains. Gift store had some cute things but seemed overpriced.
Highly recommend a trip to the museum! We had to juggle our tour time from a sunny day to an actual rainy-LA day, and the staff was very accommodating. We spent 3 hours but we could have easily spent 5.
The Godfather exhibit alone was well with the trip!
If you love Movies, this is the place to visit!
Went recently with a dear friend who is on the Academy Nominating Committee and spent a very comfortable time sitting in their stunning theatre & big comfy chairs, watching 2 episodes of Showtimes upcoming series, George & Tammy. There was a lot of music/singing throughout the movie and the theater's acoustic & sound system made it an even more enjoyable experience! The architecture is beautiful & the displays throughout the facility well represent the history of the wonderful world of entertainment!
Engaging, educational and beautifully presented! The museum takes visitors "behind the scenes" to show the art, craft and science that goes into motion pictures. Wonderful memorabilia. Fanny's Restaurant and Café offers delicious meals and tasty snacks.
Nice and interesting museum, welcoming staff, but the 19$ parking and $19 admission are prohibitive and will surely be out of the range of many who would have enjoyed the experience.
Went to see exhibit display focused on the Cobblepot Mansion/gate/fence model used in the opening scene of Batman Returns. It is an excellent exhibit with the entire 1/8" mansion model. My company etched the fence and gate that the filmmakers used on the model, so it was fun to see the parts we created as they were used on the model. The museum had a series of displays showing how the model and other elements of modelmaking were used to create parts of the first several moments of this film, and the display incorporated not just static display elements but also showed several moments from the film and some video showing filmmakers shooting the scenes with the model. This last part was most interesting that the mansion scene was filmed with the mansion flipped 90 degrees. Anyway, a very well thought out exhibit which I am certain will draw some of the modelmaker to visit. This Batman Returns exhibit is part of a larger exhibit of models and props from other popular movies like Star Wars and 2001 a Space Odyssey. We went back twice in two days and did not see everything. The latte was awesome and you must try the martini! We had a wonderful time.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures houses an extensive movie costume, poster, and animation collection. Also included are beautiful film clips and stories of the actors and actresses along with a comprehensive exhibit of the Academy Awards. A MUST SEE for any movie buff.
