Total of 6 mile hike if you decide to go all the way to the big tree. Plenty of shade, which is a big plus. One of our favorite hikes:)

People should take and post more pictures of the “no bikes” portions of the trail markers. That seems to be what’s missing.

Mostly gradual uphill for about three miles to the Indian Tree grove, almost all shaded, so good for a summer hike. Not many views, but the enormous Indian Tree is will worth the visit.

Absolutely great local hike. If you only have one day or even half a day for a weekend this is a great place to go. Heck even if you’ve got some energy to burn off after work in the summer months when it stays light late it’s totally do-able. Just bring that headlamp just in case!

Perfect roundtrip hike under 3 hours, gentle steady ascent on switchbacks among Madrone, Bay laurels and redwoods. No bikes, dogs on leash please. Horses have right of way. Beautiful views.

Nice little area to hike, it's an out the way preserve if you aren't in Marin county. I came from Oakland to hike the big trees trail.

I went on a early Wednesday afternoon and it was very peaceful. Passed by two other hikers and one horse rider my first 2.5 miles, After that I was all alone. It was terrific.

I recommend traveling to the lone group of red woods at the end of the big tree/ Indian fire road trail. It's a group of 3 and you can't miss them. Their off the trail but it's obvious.

Really enjoyed this hike. Its an uphill hike, but it isn't too steep and you can do multiple loops along the path which range anywhere from about 3-7 miles and you can go through young redwood groves if you follow Ships Mast. Its shaded nearly the whole way which makes it an awesome hike for a hot, sunny day.

A great trail at the Indian Tree Preserve. The trail climbs up the hill from the valley to the ridge, but the climb is fairly easy. The Large trees at the ridgeline and the views are an awesome sight. A great hike and area to hike if nearby.

Great place to hike in Novato. Even on a hot day it remains shady and cool on the trail as it winds up a forested hillside. The forest is a mix of oak, bay, madrone, fir and redwood. At the summit there is a grove of ancient redwoods.

This is a nice hiking trail. Parking is on the side of road were you can find room. The trail is narrow. For this reason you my need to step into the hill side to make room for passing.
There are 3 forks on the trail. The first fork is at the start of the trail. You can take Big Tree Trail or Upper meadow Trail. I took the Big Tree Trail. On the next 2 forks there are trail marking posts. Make sure you go to your right at each fork. This will get you to return to the start through the Upper Meadows trail. For piece of mind take a map of the trail with you to make sure you don't take the other trail.
Views are beautiful and the big trees are magnificent.
I do not hike often. I do walk about 3 to 4 miles a day. It took me 2 hours from start to finish.
Hope this is helpful.
