BROKEN MOUTH Lee's Homestyle reviews
14 Spam musubi: The rice was really mushy and it really affected the overall taste of the musubi. Also really salty.
Teri Chicken: flavorless, too salty.
The only thing that I liked was the shrimp plate but 5 shrimp for 17$ is too expensive.
I had the Local Plate which is the Portuguese Sausage plate that was very good and the service was outstanding. The sausage was grilled on open flame which provided a different char flavor than usual.
Order ahead because I walked up the first day at about 1245pm and they were not taking orders due to high volume. However, I ordered online the next day at 11am with no problems because Tim was nice enough to call me to ask if I wanted my order earlier than expected. Thanks Tim!
The Korean Greens are basically a green salad in Kimchi marinade and it actually works really well. I would like to include cucumbers in this but they are already a separate side order.
The spam musubi had too much furikake for my taste but was still flavorful and unique with the purple rice.
I'll be back to try the beef, shrimp, and chicken plates.
Truly one of the best spots in downtown. Every bite is incredible and chef Lee is such a great dude!
So delicious! The spin on Hawaiian X Korean culture/cooking was a top notch collab. Would recommend for everybody!
PS you must try the shrimp! And avocado toast
I ordered the shrimp plate and it was absolutely delicious! One of the best I’ve had and very worth the money:) the owner was also so sweet and gave us free juices as it was our first time there! Such a wholesome and amazing experience- i’m definitely coming again:)
I stumbled upon an article that said this place was the #1 restaurant in the entire US so I had to try it out. It was more of a casual streetfood styled place which was unexpected and therefore interesting. Mr Lee recommended the shrimp and meatjun - they were both so delicious with amazing portion! Will return when I am ever in the LA area next time
Thanks for offering us the Hawaiian drinks they were really good tooo
Yassss all the hype is spot on. Also Tim was very sweet to us when my friend and I came in before the opera. We highly recommend!
I had the Portuguese sausage breakfast plate and Spam Musubi. My friend had the shrimp plate. Everything was flavorful
5 Stars, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Mr. Lee's Beef Chun tasted almost exactly like my mother's recipe. But his oy (cucumber) kimchi was the best tasting kimchi I have ever had in my life and I've eaten a lot of kimchi. It was so full of flavor, tasty and delicious and had some mysterious yet harmonious flavors that just blended so well - well, it broke my (and my friend's) mouth.
Do yourself a favor and go try his beef chun with some of his kimchi on the side and you'll be so glad you did.
It's no wonder his restaurant is Yelp's Number One Rated Restaurant in America for 2023!
Loved finding this place 4 years ago just after moving from Hawai'i, and am relieved they survived the pandemic. Looking forward to returning soon!
Update: 2023
Congratulations on being named the Top place to eat in the USA!
I stumbled across this place by accident and I’m glad I did! It is amazing, I’m in town visiting and like always we stop down at the garment district for some shopping. My sister and I see the name Broken Mouth and we’re like have to go see what is this about. We were met by the sweetest couple ever cooking up some of the best Hawaiian food ever! In downtown Los Angeles, I tried the potatoes salad that was smooth and creamy bursting with flavors and another potato dish that also had some exciting flavors going on. But then it happened I look over to see what a lady who had already ordered and discovered the spam musubi OMG do not leave this place without trying one if you do, you will regret it. It is happiness wrapped up and served to you with a smile!
A hidden gem in DTLA, they've been on my list to try for awhile so hidden because of it's location but not in reputation.
BM is located in what seems like a random food court attached to a hidden alley that takes you away from the nose and grime of DTLA. Once you are able to find parking and the shop front, you are rewarded with kind service and even better tasting food.
This Korean take on Hawaiian food is full of flavor and comfort wrapped up in a generous package. The egg battered dipped beef is a nice fusion of flavors but the star of the show is the garlic Shrimp that's salty, crunchy, buttery, and properly cooked. The lunch plates comes with seasonal greens / sides and a big scoop of a tasty purple rice with a house blend furikake.
If you are hungry and anywhere near the area, Lee's spot is definitely worth the trouble and time.
Delicious! The spam musubi was so so delicious. The beef plate was crispy and so flavorful.
TRY THIS SPOT!
The 5. Stars are all well deserved.these plates are full of flavor and texture
Had the:
Beef Plate - amazingly tender and soaked in flavor
Chicken Plate - killer breading and the sauce was awesome. Heated but not overly spicy and definitely didn't take away any flavor
Shrimp Plate - breading is super light and tasty
Braised Potatoes - omg.such savory flavor
Pickled Carrots - kinda sweet and light and super palate refresher
Cucumber Kimchi - fresh and crunchy and just enough spice to add a little texture but not spicy
The Plates come with Purple Rice and Potato. Mac - both perfect Hawaiian sides. Rice is steamed with what looks like furikake sprinkled on top - soooo good. And the Potato. Mac has a great texture that doesn't get too creamy.
The Chef/Owner was extremely nice to us and we talked about the menu for a minute and he seems like a genuinely nice person who sincerely cares about this food and his customers. There's passion in this food for sure.and passion fruit in the drink fridge!
Uniquely delicious food, vibey atmosphere, and the owner Tim was a nice guy.would definitely come back to support this Korean/Hawaiian establishment
