Custom House Museum reviews
8Custom House Museum in Monterey, California Historical Landmark #1, displays sone of the most Intriguing history of CA that I've ever seen. Docents are knowledgeable and the displays are full of wonderful reminders of our state's rich history. Highly, highly recommend!
December, 2021. I always like learning about Monterey's history here & looking at the objects on display. I like buying tee shirts, post cards, & magnets? Here & next door.
Follow the path of history trail, and explore all the sites along the path.
From gardens, to house museums, this place has a story to tell. It took me about 1-2 hours to explore around, but it's totally self paced.
This a great place to visit, we learn so much about California and when it was part of Mexico, call La Alta California.
Monterey was the capitol, and just a this spot the American flag was starting for the first time, even before was American land.
Also you can see so many artifacts of that time!
Thus was a great place to take my family and lear about both cultures.
Small museum that features replicas and old items from the customs house. It has free admission and is worth dropping by to admire the architecture and the history of the building. It is also super cool to see all of the items that used to pass through the customs house up close, although touching is prohibited during COVID-19.
Update- It is now open again to the public. Worth a quick stop for Spanish, Mexican and US transitions through history. It is next to the pier and the exit faces a small park. Takes a few to ten minutes or so, depending on how many questions you have. Docent was very helpful.
Highly recommend paying ($10) for the curated tour (10am & 2pm daily) by one of the knowledgeable State Parks & Rec staff. It's a 45-60 min fascinating short walk of:
* Custom House Museum
* First Brick House
* Old Whaling Station
* California's First Theater
* Joseph Boston Store
* Memory Garden
* Pacific House Museum
