4I had the sad misfortune of visiting after the Mosquito Fire burned through, but it did add a certain grace to the sad history of this place.
I loved the drive out to here. Way up in the hills, and very remote and relaxing. Easy drive, don't NEED a 4 wheeler to get to it, but there are lots of other roads to see on the way.
The hike to Deadwood from Michigan Bluff along the Western States Trail is challenging and beautiful. As you get close to Deadwood and beyond towards Devil's Thumb there are signs telling the history and significance of WS Trail. There is a lone marker at Deadwood Cemetery listing the names of those resting there. A good spot to take a break on your way to Devil's Thumb.
Commercialized over board is the only thing you can say. Why should anyone have to pay to enter a cemetery? Beware.
