Dr. Funk, San Jose CA

After Smoke Tiki, I was skeptical of a legitimate Tiki bar in San Jose, but this one fits the bill. With classics from Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic's, and Tiki-Ti on the menu, they have a passion and have done their research. Hope to go back soon!

Horrible service and unreasonable prices for such bad food. We didn't know we got ripped off until we got the email receipt and noticed they had included a large party 18% gratuity for a PARTY OF 5! They don't show the breakdown of the receipt when you're paying and they still ask you if you wanna leave a tip so gotta be careful with that. The server we got was rude and seemed upset when I asked her for the check. Please don't waste your money on this place.

Met up with some friends to grab some drinks.

We had the mai tai, missionary's downfall, bali bali, and vacation valhalla. No one really enjoyed their drinks. They all tasted a bit off for us.

Service was slow that night with ordering, and refilling water.

Parking in SJ is tough in peak hours, so you may need to walk a few blocks.

Consistency seems to be a bit of an issue here looking at the other reviews.

A few friends brought my girlfriend here, she was served undercooked pretty much raw chicken that was seared on the sides. She had been given food poisoning from eating the food, the service was underwhelming, drinks were the only saving grace.

They didn’t even comp her meal when they brought it up to the server… this has been the worst tiki bar we have been to so far.

Server started by trying to bring us the wrong food, they seemed overwhelmed, took forever to get out drinks.

Dr. Funk is an awesome tiki bar with a fun atmosphere and a good drink variety. The food is good, too!

Amazing Tiki bar right in downtown San Jose. The atmosphere inside makes you feel like you're out by the beach. Nice outdoor patio space as well.

Craft cocktails are the way to go here. Something for everyone. Be sure to check out some great pub food as well.

Top notch tiki bar at the back of the Farmers' Union building. Don't make the mistake of going to the "other tiki bar" about a block away.

I generally like Dr. Funk and spend a decent amount of time here when in town on business. That said, they have shortcomings that are holding them back, and I hope to see improved:

- No Tiki glasswear. I asked about this, and was told that the owner (s) didn't think it was important enough to spend the money on. Super bummer, because it really creates that atmosphere when you have drinks served in appropriate glasses. They're one of the few Tiki bars I've been to that skimps here. At least they have Tiki bowls for the larger shared drinks, but that's not usually where I go.

- Food used to be great, but has gone downhill significantly. When they first opened, I believe they ran just their own kitchen, and the food was quite solid. Loved the chicken sandwich. Sometime in the last 9 months they've started using the kitchen to provide food for O'Flaherty's as well (as the previous restaurant at this location did). Maybe coincidental and they lost their better chef as well, but in that time I've noticed all the food is not prepared and cooked to their original standard. They just changed their fries within the last few weeks, and they're now bad enough to the point I'd not order them again.

- Menu drinks are pre-mixed. If I'm paying $16-18 for a cocktail, I'd like it to be made fresh. I realize they get busy at certain times and pre-mixing saves a LOT of time, so I'd understand if 8-midnight on weekends was pre-mixes, but a lot of the time the bartenders are just waiting around for drink orders. Not doing pre-mixes would also allow the bartenders to take more customer preference to tweak the drinks, have more showmanship, etc.

The owners took the time when Dr. Funk opened to invest heavily in the design and atmosphere of the bar, but now that it's been up and running for over a year it's honestly not as good as Trader Sam's at Disneyland due to the above shortcomings, to say nothing for comparing it with Forbidden Island, Smuggler's Cove, and The Jungle Bird. I really hope they decide to re-invest in making it a world class Tiki bar, rather than being content with the middling state to which it's fallen.

Great tiki bar atmosphere. Dr Funk was able to accommodate a large party walk-in. Group loves the vibe.

This place was amazing, my friend and I were walking around San Jose San Pedro square area and saw a sign outside that read Dr. Funk, and I thought that has a cool ring, so we decided to check it out. So it turns out it is a Tiki bar that is beautiful from the inside and very forest-like. We decided to share one of the punch bowls called the Scorpion, and I have to say the presentation was fantastic, and the drink was strong. It was just the two of us, we did get a bit drunk, and it was all good. So the time we went, they were not serving any bites to eat. I wish I got a chance to try the food but next time for sure. This place is fantastic for catching up with friends or a night out. The service here was excellent and very helpful in assisting us in finding the right drink. I can't wait to back and get the Scorpion drink again!

Went on a cold rainy day to this place. Ordered a cocktail which was good. It was loud in here. Ordered chicken wings to the table which was dry and it did not have the sauces mentioned mentioned on the menu. Food could’ve been better.

A wonderful place with a tropical vibe, trippy lights, great staff and strong cocktails. Drinks are a bit overpriced but overall, a fun spot to chill with friends!

We had planned to have a night in Dr. Funks om Sat night until we were charged 9 dollars for half a pint of draft lager which was pretty flat, asked the bar man if they do pints and they said they don't do pints, we left after one drink, it was a pity, its a really cool looking place, they need to review their beer prices! Insanely over priced!

Service is very poor! We didn't get food for longest time after ordering and then we asked everything came together cold! Clearly the server forgot us.

Love this place. Always makes me feel like I’m on vacation in a tropical setting. Then I walk outside and it’s downtown San Jose. Not terrible, just not tropical. Seriously though, great drinks at Dr. Funks, top rate bartender’s.

Saturday night review: Great drinks and great vibes. We tried to come earlier at 9pm and there was a huge waitlist. Came back ground 12am and it was pretty empty inside. Friend ordered a huge drink for the table and it was actually really tasty and fun. I'll be coming back for their happy hour to see how that's like:)

Service was great! The cocktails are insanely customized! The drinks are amazing The XXX will get you tippy. The food was delicious. This was my first time here and it didn't disappoint. The food menu is small but they have something for everyone!

The best tiki bar ever! I really enjoyed my last visit there, drinks are so delicious and pretty, food is good, nice music, clean and excelente service.

The only tiki bar in San Jose, maybe that’s why it attracts eyes. Great ambience but drinks were not good. Staff could be more friendlier too.
Table next to us didn’t like the drinks as well.
