Handlery Union Square Hotel reviews
15 We spent 4 nights at this hotel in a great location near Union Square. The reception needs to be reviewed for certain evening employees.
The room was spacious (first queen) on the 5th floor with a slight view of the pool; the door opposite ours was a service door which woke us up several times during the night. The shower needs to be reviewed because of the cracked ceiling, very old shower head. A little update would be welcome. Spacious closet and very comfortable bedding.
Parking available for $70; Please note this is a valet parking service, you will not have access to your car.
Next door, there are restaurants, stores, a CVS, a Walgreen, a TARGET supermarket 10 minutes away, the Big Bus Tour stop, the Cable Car stop 5 minutes away, and the Mason café 2 minutes away.for breakfast.
Ideal starting point to explore San Francisco. Very nice hotel with (unusual) outdoor pool.
A hotel from the history books. In dire need of a complete makeover. Dirty carpets, noisy a/c, dark and moldy curtains - just to mention a few. The only good thing is the location. I suggest to find something better. Only charming thins was the old Mail Drop box.
Historic hotel in a central location convenient for visiting the city. Very courteous staff and clean and comfortable rooms.
Relatively small bathroom and shower converted into a bath.
We were guests in the building next to the "historical" one.
The only flaw I point out is the age of the interior.
Centrally located with all shops within a few hundred meters, room a bit small by standard, friendly staff, would recommend for a few nights. Breakfast is not included, they offer a 20% discount if you go to them. Overall good.
We got a "much nicer room" that was actually big and clean. Thanks David for the attention.beds very comfortable. View south down the road was good. Bathroom small and not very modern. Shower head too low for people over 1.75m. Room service was good!
Wouldn't come back here for one reason: the location.
A lot of homeless people in the area, which is not so serious in other parts of the city. Also had an unpleasant first experience on arrival hence the upgrade - although it was not the hotel's fault.
Around the corner you can see junkies injecting heroin.
The area around Fisherman's Wharf is much more pleasant. Would take a hotel there next time. Yes, I was aware of the proximity to Tenderloin beforehand, but when you're right in the middle of it, it's something else again.
Otherwise proximity to Union Square good for public transportation or hop on hop off.
First time staying here it's close to restaurants and shops parking is really easy to get to they have valet. The swimming pool was refreshing and the rooms were clean and quiet definitely recommend staying here I know I will again.
Good quality hotel. Reasonable price and hard working staff. No breakfast included but there are so many breakfast restaurants nearby. Huge problem: WiFi is way too slow for 2023.
Direct location at Union Square, cable car stop right nearby. Small rooms but clean and quiet. Valet parking, relatively expensive as usual for SF, but good option for tourists to park their cars
Perfect place to stay right in San Francisco!
The hotel and car park staff are EXTREMELY welcoming, the hotel is clean and the location is superb!
Highly recommended if you are in town!
Hotel very well located and clean. Unpleasant smell in the hall but not in the rooms. Small but pretty pool to enjoy a swim after a day of sightseeing. Comfortable bedding. Unfortunately the connecting rooms are poorly soundproofed.
I was there for 3 nights. The Rooms are simple but still spacious, enough to have 4 Suitcases laying on the ground (open) and still not feeling bothered by them. The Concierge helped us as needed so I'm more than pleasured about the service. Also there are nice food options just around the corner, some in less than 5 walking minutes. A nice thing is, that the last stop of the famous cable Car is not too far away (so easy to get on there). The only criticism I got is:
1. There is no breakfast (as described, but it still would be nice)
2. Sadly there are due to many factors, also that the hotel is just 2/3 blocks away from the poorest district of San Francisco, here and there some homeless people comming up the streets near the hotel. After you may be a little bit shocked at the beginning, you will get used to it, since as at least I experienced, they are pretty peaceful, as long as you dont disrespect them.
To wrap it up:
A really nice stay in a beautiful city, everything as expected and even better. The only bad things are little ones or some the Hotel Owners don't have much control over. Would recommend it for sure!
Small rooms and due for a refresh but you don't go to the Handlery for its rooms but for its location. Very well located (metro, cable car, restaurants, etc.) On-site swimming pool and small gym.
Good hotel, nice swimming pool and well located (towards the cable car terminus).
On the other hand, a little background noise in the room (fridge, air conditioning, etc.).
Very nice hotel at a great location. Staff is friendly, rooms are clean, breakfast discount coupon for amazing shop around the corner. Concierge was also extremely helpful with many good tips for the city and took its time.
My biggest complaint is the wi-fi. It is 2023 and the hotel wifi is not able to let me watch youtube videos on setting 480p (!), which is drastically low. It made browsing the web simply impossible and we often went to the nearest starbucks to plan the day and browse for some things to do.
All in all a good hotel, would have gotten 5 stars if wifi was up to modern standards.
