Harbor Fish & Chips reviews
16Been coming here for 30 years. A must if you're looking for a simple, hole in the wall fish and chips experience in Oceanside.
Food was excellent.
The prices are outrageous,
the service was suffering.
The decor was simple and
too understated for the prices.
Better to lower prices and eliminate the smug staff.
Great location to just sit back and watch the boats and people go by. The food is good the chips aka fries could be a bit more British style but they were decent. I would return here again for a quick bite to eat.
I read the reviews and though it was worth a drive while visiting SoCal. Being from Seattle, I grew up with Ivar’s and Spud’s Fish and Chips. The building is interesting. When we received our meal, my eyes popped out of my head. HUGE pieces of fish that looked and smelled great on a bed of fries and a side of slaw. The slaw was extremely good. The meal went down hill from there. While the fish looked like they were substantial, over 70% of that was batter. It took two bites from the end to actually get to some fish. The fish was pretty thin, too, so most of the girth was also batter. The fish was good quality, but not much there compared to the size of the pieces in the basket. We had been looking for fish and chips all the way along the Oregon and California coast on this trip so were really hoping this would be a good experience. Not! If you like LOTS of batter on skimpy fish with poor cold fries and a great view this is your place.
You order from the counter and sit down and wait for your number to be called.
Really good fish and chips pretty good grilled fish very good clam chowder.
Nice view of the harbor but plastic chairs.
Been coming her for a few years (Since the 1980's.)
Always serve a quality product.
Rarely visit the Carlsbad store, but the O'side Harbor store is my preference.
Sometimes, the fish seems a bit "juicy. " so I let the fish drain on a couple napkins beside the fries.
Helpful tip: Don't leave your tartar sauce unattended, as seagulls LOVE this stuff! Be sure you get all the condiments before your # is called.
Lastly, get the "medium basket and beverage, then walk the 100 yards to the sand. Have your picnic on the sand at sunset.dang, this is sounding pretty good, I might have to do this tonight!
The fish tacos are GIGANTIC! They are also delicious, only negative is there alot of cabbage/ lettuce on the gigantic fish taco.fish portions are good/ large, but I just can't eat that much cabbage lol
Nice people working there. The breaded fish was 50% batter and 50% fish. It was not my favorite. Neither were the fries. The salad was not worth $5.
The grilled fish was awesome
Our friends from Arizona went nuts over the fish tacos.
Its not a fancy place but comfortable.dinner was more expensive than Rockin Baja 4 doors away, that we had the previous night.but Rockin Baja had and hour wait on Friday.so this was a good back up.
This used to be five stars for food but despite having being assured at 1: 00 p.m. Today that they were open until 8: 00, when we arrived at 7: 15 after a 45-minute drive, they shooed us away and told us they were closing "because it's been a slow night". That attitude speaks for itself.
Excellent view of the harbor, great quality of fried fish but the fries were soggy and cold. Came here with a hunger for fish and chips and was very lucky to get a parking spot by the restaurant. Loved the fish but I felt like the fries could have been way better especially when their main business is to fry stuff
Tried the night before but they closed early due to slow business. Called ahead tonight and food was ready as promised. Fish and chips was hot and delicious but portions were inconsistent in size. Some smaller pieces were overcooked. Some pieces of battered fish had barely any fish inside. Mostly batter. Each of our three orders had one perfect piece. I look forward to my once a year visit to the harbor and this meal. So disappointed. This is why some places slowly disappear.
I have to say I enjoyed my fish n chips. The fish was perfectly fried but a little greasy. Still really good! Fries and coleslaw.both decent. Also five stars for location.beautiful view of harbor and short walk to the beach. Will return again if in the area.
I got the 2 piece fish and chips combo and it was amazing. The fish is cooked right and the fries are good too. I went on a Monday night so it wasn't very crowded.
During the height of the pandemic the food staff does not wear any type of mask. It shows a lack of concern for patrons, I simply turned around in disgust and walked out.
THE BEST fish tacos on Earth. This establishment has been dear to my family's heart for years, and it's the first thing I want to do if I take a weekend trip to the beach. These Perfect large crispy golden fillets with sauce and slaw drizzled on top are amazing-I am normally not a fish or slaw person but this combo is addictive in their fish tacos. I get the 2 piece combo with fries (also cooked to perfection). On a Really ambitious day I order the 3 piece. As a 10 year customer, there was a 1 year period where the fish was smaller and could be slightly overcooked, but thankfully they have returned to their original glory the 3 times I have visited since Covid started.
