I am deeply disappointed to have had such a negative experience at House of Nanking. The lack of professionalism displayed by the owner and staff was disheartening, and it was evident that they did not enjoy their work. I found myself constantly rushed to place an order without adequate time to review the menu.

Furthermore, the sight of boxes piled throughout the restaurant and dining tables being used for storage was unsightly and gave the impression of disorganization. While it is commendable that the staff wore plastic gloves, it was concerning to witness them not changing gloves after disposing of kitchen trash, including toothpicks, in full view of the street before returning to the kitchen to handle plates waiting to be served.

The state of the bathroom was appalling, and I have serious doubts that it would meet the standards set by the health department. If a visit were to be conducted, I believe it would warrant closure. It is unfortunate that establishments like House of Nanking rely on television shows to boost their reputation, as it seems that the quality of their service has significantly declined.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend returning to this establishment. The overall experience was far from enjoyable, and the issues with customer service and cleanliness were too significant to overlook. I would advise seeking alternative dining options that prioritize professionalism, cleanliness, and a pleasant dining atmosphere.

If you are visiting San Francisco, your trip is only complete if you have dinner at House of Nanking. Their clam, wonton and vegetable soup os out of this world great. Friendly owner and staff.

House of Nanking is a San Francisco legacy business. You simply MUST EAT THEIR FOOD. I've been eating there whenever I visit the City since 1990 [they opened in 1988]. Google them and their story. Also try Fang, the restaurant co-founded and run by Chef Kathy Fang, daughter of Peter Fang who started Nanking. You will LOVE THEIR AMAZING CHINESE FOOD, I promise! Nanking used to be a real "hole in the wall, " flanked by 2 other Chinese restaurants with a table or 2 occupied while a line formed down the block, people waiting to eat at Nanking. It NEVER disappoints. Let them order for you! It's an experience. Go! Now! Even though parking is hars, better to eat there so your crispy food order is still crispy - Door Dash takes 50 minutes

This is one of the best food places in SF. Make sure to ask them to take care of ordering and do family style.

Amazing food and very veg/vegan friendly

Party of 8 for dinner. Food was superb, The Famous Nanking Sesame chicken was excellent, don't go there without trying it. The lady serving us made selections of food and they where all very good including a starter with Bao bun filled with chicken. We paid 55$/person and had two Tsing Tao beers each. I really recommend this place, might a bit of que but usually it goes fast. Service was fast in Chinese style.

I ordered a "Fang's Crispy Beef and Garlic Bok Choy". I did not like this dish at all. Too salty, too greasy, too sweet. I don't know where the beef comes from, but it wasn't prime cuts. I came in 2019 and I had a great time. I had not been able to finish the dish which was very generous, accompanied by rice.
This time there was only beef in sauce but no rice.
Accompanied by an iced tea, I paid $31.
The employees talk to each other while shouting, it's not pleasant, bad atmosphere. They are very insistent that you leave a tip. Restaurant to avoid!

Great Asian fusion cuisine! Was recommended to us several times by locals. Be sure to order the fried rice.

Some of the best Chinese food I've ever had! The food was plentiful. We came at the right time and walked right in. There was a line to get in as we were leaving. I would definitely return.

Food was great! Atmosphere was definitely busy. Got here at 6: 30 on a Tuesday and there was no wait; when we left, there was a line down the block! I can see why people line up for the food.

Good if somewhat spartan restaurant. The bathroom was also a storage room. Very good food, fair prices, for all dishes there was a vegetarian option. The only flaw the waitress stopped us to compulsorily add the tip to the bill.

I came here because a friend recommended this place and there was a pretty big line so I was expecting a lot more. The outside seating is very nice but I feel as if the heaters could be turned on until later at night. The chicken was okay, kinda like any other sesame chicken (I’ve had better). The fried rice was really good! It was my favorite. And then the chow mein was disappointing. The servers didn’t even say a word to us but I guess that’s how asian restaurants typically are.

Hands down one of the best house noodles I’ve ever had in my life. Ordered the black sesame noodles and it was so good! The portion’s filling, taste is authentic and flavourful, service was fast and efficient, so we’re very happy with our food and dining experience overall. Definitely a must try in San Francisco!
