John's Grill, San Francisco CA

Just had the best steak dinner I’ve had in my life. Glad I stopped in. This is my new favourite restaurant. Just visiting from out of the country but I’ll be sure to stop here every time I ever return to San Francisco. The food, atmosphere, and friendly staff made this such a nice experience.

Wow, what a fantastic experience from start to finish. We left feeling like it was an absolute honour to have a meal here. This gem in San Francisco definitely doesn't rest on its laurels from years past. Thank you so much for being the highlight to our stay in San Francisco, we can't wait to come back one day.

Sitting here now writing the review. They don’t seem to be very busy but have been done with my meal for about 10-15 minutes. No one has came by with a check or dessert menu. (A lot of people have came by and looked at me but no one has spoken to me I should say). The steak was good, my baked potato was old (it had been sitting around for a while and probably looked better in its earlier moments). Would have given more stars if I actually had gotten some service.

Edit: spoke to another server and my server just walked out, along with the bartender and bus boy.
I guess no one cares anymore about work ethic.

I come in regular on my lunch and do take out. But waiting at the bar im given a free beverage or water with a kind face. Never got one negative look or comment from the staff.
I used to have events there in the 80s upstairs. Im middle class but they treat me as if I was with the Mayor.

Ribeye Steak was tough and loaded with gristle and fat. Perfectly cooked? Not really. Just barely above rare but only half way to medium rare. The sad part was that even being undercooked provided no juices when slicing in to it. The steamed veggies were a mix of over/under done with some of the greenbeans showing obvious signs of needing to be culled rather than cooked. The potatoe, dinner salad, and the chocolate mousse torte were the highlites of the meal.

Service was good for such a busy night even though it was 3 different servers that checked on me. Wait time wasn't bad at all for requests and placing orders considering how busy they were.

Quintessential steak house. Wonderful service, nice homey wooden atmosphere, and good basic food. Steaks and seafood. Nice cocktails and wine selection. I would definitely go again

Why would you get anything other than the Sam Spade Lamb Chops? The history of John’s is amazing, the service top notch, but the food; the Food! Ample bread and sizable portions make this place a great option. Seriously, do yourself a favor, come down and get the Lamb Chops with the Heirloom and Baratta salad. It will change your life.

I ordered a NY strip cooked medium, and got just that. Good quality cut paired with sauteed green beans and baby carrot. Enjoyed a glass of the house cab sav, which was as tasty as the pricier cabs I sampled. John's Grill has a dark-wood paneled interior and intimate vibe. Signed black & white photos of old-time celebrities adorn the walls, testifying to the Grill's 1908 origins. Excellent value. I'll be back.

The food at this restaurant is spectacular, I didn't believe much in their fish & chips and they surprised me, the flavor, the breading and the fries, wow I loved them. Just like their meats. You CAN'T stop trying the fish & chips

The service is excellent, the staff is very happy, very attentive and they help you if you have any difficulties.

It lacks a star only for the cocktails, I would love to see them improve a little.

I wanted to eat steak, so I read the reviews and made a reservation here.
It was convenient to be able to make same-day reservations and change time slots from the website.
Since I was using it for my anniversary, I selected the anniversary option and made a reservation, and I was impressed by the many services they provided, such as a menu with a message and a special bottle of wine.
The staff took good care of me from start to finish and made my stay comfortable.
Even though the food was reasonably priced, it was all very delicious and excellent.
I received the best service, so I would definitely use them again when I go to San Francisco.

They don't have much of a selection good thing we are pretty easy to please. Steak and potatoes good I would have like a loaded baked potato. I would have like to see some more appetizer options.

My wife and I were hungry. I asked two SFPD offers where a good place is for dinner. They said John's Grill.
I have never been given bad information from firefighters and police where to eat when I am visiting a city.
My wife had chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I had the halibut and mashed potatoes and vegetables.
This restaurant has been there for years and a huge following of both SFFD & SFPD plus city officials.
It has a feeling of a speakeasy in the twenty and thirties

My partner and I are in town from Louisiana for our birthday, the 15th and the 18th, we picked this place and we were not disappointed! My lamb was both tender and tasty as was his steak. The staff was professional, polite, and welcoming. We are a minority and the only ones there at the time. It was very inclusive and I would encourage anyone and everyone hungry for great food, great service, and great atmosphere to boot to eat there. Amazing!

Great service and food. The steaks could be a bit thicker but for the price i think it's worth it. We had rib eye and ny steak.

Classic old school vibe steak house. You can feel the history here. There are a lot of new fancy high end steak places with very expensive steaks in San Francisco and if you like that new fancy hip vibe you have plenty to choose from. This is very traditional and very old school and the food and service is fantastic. It’s a comfortable intimate setting. Quick fast and attentive service, waiter was always asking if we needed more soda or bread or anything else. Prices were very reasonable. I ordered the filet and it was cooked to perfection, tender, juicy, seared to crispy outside and moist inside. It also included green beans, baked potato and cooked carrot. Most other high end steak places charge you for this. Also ordered fries which were crispy and seasoned perfectly and grilled onions which I ate with baked potato. All in all a terrific place for a nice steak dinner.

This place is packed so I would recommend a reservation however it’s definitely worth making. I would not take children here it’s more of an adult place. There is a full bar & the bartender is heavy handed on the alcohol! John the manager was amazing with setting up our wonderful window table. The bouncer aka host was very accommodating & helped us by walking us to the cable car & even making sure we had a seat on the car. The food was amazing, & you have to try the escargot it is so delicious! The steak was cooked to perfection & try the creamed spinach with it! Great place with so much history.
