Kelso Depot Visitor Center reviews
15The actual center was closed, but the bathrooms are open.a self-guided tour is still possible and I will include some photos I took.great way to unwind along a long pleasant drive.you will need to bring your own picnic items at Kelso depot.if heading further Amboy has food and gas.
Mojave has some great views, like the Kelso dune, hole in the wall trail. They are pretty far away from the visitor center and it is not on the way, so you will not come here if you just visit other views. But it is still disappointing to find out it has been closed for at least, 3 years? Hope they could open it soon.
Historical train depot, 2 person jail cell, abandoned post office, and the remains of the original train depot.
Once you get past the idea that there is a major train depot in the literal middle of nowhere still being maintained there isn’t much to it. Be just as good decaying. But at least if you go this way you may have a 20 minute wait as trains will stop and not move for at least that long. So that’s nice. Have extra gas as you gotta run the AC while waiting.
Temporarily closed but a ranger happened happened to open it up when I was there on 12/3/22. Good place to get local info if the rangers are there.
Really cool to check out. I highly recommend to visit once. Great pit stop when driving through the Mohave Preserve.
This place is awesome, it’s been completely restored and it’s almost 100 years old. It’s definitely a place you need to stop and check out. If you can make this happen it will increase your entire experience. Pack a lunch, maybe a picnic or grab some fast food when you’re out on the 40 or even back on 815 MM set along the side of the train tracks and watch the trains go by with that hundred old building in the background. It’s like a walk-through history and it really is a nice place to take a pitstop when traveling along I 40
If you like the rugged west, then this is a great place to visit. Such amazing beauty here. Old depot is quite fascinating.
Kelso Depot is a great place to visit in the Mojave Desert. There are amazing cactus surrounding the area driving into the depot, there are mountains surrounding the Kelso Depot area. The Kelso Depot has a parking area and restrooms, which makes this stop convenient if you are visiting the desert.
Beautiful train station, I would love to go in and see it. Only problem it's always closed
Found this only by accident when putting the shortest route 6. I loved the history of this place and the welcome center was very nice. Well worth the trip along the off beaten path. Not much to offer as far as the town itself goes.
Was closed when we went by 08-11-21. My daughter little disappointed she couldn't get her junior ranger badge.
Really cool little spot to explore, it wasn't open while we were there but still really neat to walk around and peek through windows. Highly reccomend a look around, we enjoyed it.
It has a small library! With comfy chairs! You can sit and read about all kinds of relevant stuff.
History display was decent. There is an elevator. There are some places to sit.
Ranger was helpful (always talk with rangers!). Cool building.
And did I mention the library?
Cute place to stop and the drive. They have a little museum. And restrooms. Little snack bar and run by the national park system
