Kona Kakes Tropical Cake Bakery

The most delicious cakes in the world BAR NONE! And the owners are so incredibly nice! They make you feel like you're not just a customer, but a friend. I love these people and their cakes.

I've been purchasing my cakes from Kona for over 10 years, back when they met you in a parking lot to pick up your order. They've come a long way and now have a store front. I'm very happy they've had a successful business! Their cakes are wonderful. If you're looking for something tropical and a taste of paradise, you have found the right bakery. They have flavors from guava, to haupia, pineapple, to macadamia nut. My personal favorite is the chocolate caramel mac nut with hazelnut cream. It's pure heaven. Since I've been coming for years, I have obviously paid attention to how they have evolved over the years and also their increase in price. When I first purchased in 2012 I paid $46 for a an 8 inch cake. In 2020, $67.00 for the same 8 inch, and in 2022, $74 for the same 8 inch cake. I understand inflation, but this is a little steep for an 8 inch cake. You can get something comparable at other fine bakeries like Hans and Harry's for half the price. For special occasions I return to Kona and I'm willing to pay the price. The last cake I purchased was the same familiar taste, but unfortunately a little too much whipped cream. So much whipped cream that when I went to slice the cake it sort of shifted. The filling with the caramel and mac nut was almost so thin I could barely taste it. I'm hoping it was a fluke and that they're not one of these businesses that is increasing their prices but starts skimping on the fine ingredients to cut costs. This is not a complaint but more constructive criticism. I will be a lifelong customer, but will definitely continue to consider the price: quality factor.

Our family tried the haupia cake, and EVERYBODY who tried it LOVED it. The frosting was so light, the coconut shavings were very fresh, and the haupia was so good. The cake itself was very full and delicious. The cake overall was not overly sweet, and it made us wanting to keep eating more. The freshness stayed until the cake was completely gone, although that was only 2 days because everybody wanted more and more of the cake. Can't wait to try more of the flavors of the cake!

I worked with Janice on ordering our wedding cake. She was patient, kind, and helpful throughout the entire process. The cake was absolutely beautiful with the fresh fruit and greenery, and the guava flavor was delicious! We are so pleased with our experience and will be returning to eat more cake:)

If you're thinking of ordering a cake from this company, DO IT! You will not regret it.
I am from Memphis, Tennessee. My family and I traveled to San Diego for my sisters elopement. Let me just say, this was actually the BEST cake I have ever tasted.on top of the amazing flavor, the presentation was just absolutely beautiful. I ordered a simple 10 inch all white with white orchids. It was everything. Flawless and the bride LOVED it.
Janice was absolutely amazing at communicating with me. I am so glad I put my faith in this company. They went above and beyond. I will forever go back to them for all cake needs in the future and refer them to everyone I know in the area. THANK YOU KONA KAKES, for helping my sister's special day even more special.

Definitely the most delicious cake! I was in town for my son’s wedding, but needed a cake for 2 of my son’s birthdays the same weekend. I wanted it for a surprise cake the evening of the wedding rehearsal dinner. It’s so hard to find a nice cake when you’re not familiar, and are from out of town. I chose Kona Kakes because they had awesome reviews. The cake was beautiful. I got the one everyone raved about, Carmel macadamia! Everyone loved this cake! Everyone! Not too sweet! Delicious frosting! So moist! Definitely will be our go to place for all future celebration cakes in SD! Yum!

Ordered 2 cakes from here and they were amazing. Passionfruit or the Haupia cakes are must-try! Staff was friendly and helpful, made ordering a breeze. We will definitely be back!

Best cake I've ever had. It was a Coconut Haupia cake, which no one here makes anything with Haupia as it is a popular flavor in Hawaii. The cake is very dense and moist and the Haupia had the best flavor. The cake was absolutely gorgeous, covered in fresh flowers. Not an inexpensive cake but definitely worth every dollar. I will be ordering my cakes from now on here.

Went to a party last night in SDC that had 2 of Kona’s Kakes. Immediately I noticed the presentation. The cakes were large and beautifully decorated with fresh flowers. They were two different flavors. I’m not sure which, but by the description I think one was carmel macadamia. Not chintzy on the macadamia I might add. They both tasted amazing, super fresh and not too sweet. There was no “commercial” taste to the cakes, which I appreciated. They were so delicious and impressive I asked the hostess where she got them. Apparently I was not alone. Several guests inquired about the bakery. Our next event will include a Kona Kake.

My Girlfriend and I, currently have a long distance relationship. She lives in San Diego California, and I live in New York. She is so special to me but the distance that separates us, at times makes it tough? So, when her birthday rolled around - I had to scramble to try to find a cake at the last minute…
Every place I called had no cakes to sell or made it difficult to order. That all changed when I contacted Kona Kakes, They were AMAZING! From start to finish, everything was done mostly over the phone or via email Janice & Aaron are so helpful … And though they do NOT provide delivery - They suggested a Uber to accommodate the delivery, they made sure that Kona Kake, made it on board safe and sound … And made her day sooooooo so special! Thank you so much guys - And I look forward to ordering again though I did not taste the cake, It got high delicious tasty reviews and smiles from those who did eat…

Completely unprofessional staff and management. Avoid at all cost!

We came from out of town for an 8-inch birthday cake for $150 that we had to wait for because the management team couldn’t be honest and tell us a pick up time. All they stated in the email is that they open at 11am and “an assistant is there until 4. ” We showed up at 3: 30 pm to wait for a cake, which we happily did, but management kept giving us the run around on when the cake would be ready. They kept saying “5-10 minutes. ” Finally, the cake is done and ready at 4: 10. Clearly, we are unhappy customers and instead of listening to us, they continued to argue with us and stared us down as we walked out and wanted us out of their shop.

Note to the owners: having decent customer service and honesty is part of owning a good business Janice. But from reading previous reviews on Yelp, Janice does not care about her customers.

You cannot go wrong with the carmel macadamia nut cake! So unique and delicious. Also freezes well if you order too much or have leftovers.:)

Had two cakes for my birthday! The strawberry guava and the iconic caramel macadamia. They were beautiful with gorgeous flowers on top and my guests raved about them. I got a text the next day from a friend asking for the bakery name! Kona never disappoints!

My family and I were visiting San Diego for my daughters 21st birthday. I thought of everything but the cake. I called Kona Kakes on Friday hoping for a cake by Sunday, I was told they are closed on Sunday, so they could have it ready on Saturday. We were enjoying the zoo Saturday and I completely forgot about the cake. It was after store hours but I tried to reach them by phone anyways, the owner answered and said she would wait for us to arrive. This in itself was truly amazing, but the cake! The cake was beautiful, delicious, moist, decadent, and extremely flavorful! We had the Caramel Macadamia Nut Cake. Everyone and most of all, my daughter loved the cake! If you live near Kona Kakes then count yourself blessed and try this place. I wish there was a Kona Kakes in Las Vegas.
