Lava Beds National Monument reviews
12 The Lava Beds are great
place to explore lava caves,
prehistoric pictographs,
and the Modoc battle sites.
You will find a number of
lave caves to explore
ranging from the lighted
Mushpot Cave to the
challenging Catacombs
Cave (6903 ft)
A number of other sites
include Mammoth Crater,
Fleener Chimneys (vents
and spatter cones), and
Symbol Bridge (pictographs)
The visitor center has
flashlights to explore the
caves.
Located near Tulelake, about
an hour from Klamath Falls.
A great place to learn about
the struggles of the local
Modoc tribes, explore lava
caves, and view prehistoric
sites.
Unexpected side trip that turned out to be way cooler than expected. Great information center and knowledgeable rangers. And sooo many lava tubes to explore for all levels - some where you can walk through and others you need to crawl for. Plus mammoth crater - up close with the cone.
This place was a blast my family and I went in every cave that were not closed highly recommend if u haven't been here and love the out doors highly recommend 2 head lamps one to wear one for back up and batteries and knee pads and gloves if u plan on exploring all the caves cause some require u to crawl. In certain places. And a small backpack to carry water. Camping is 10$ a night
Beautiful place to explore caves that were made from erupted lava. Do stop by at visitor center before to collect flashlights.
Make sure to get some free flashlights from the visitor center if you don't have any. Phone flashes are not enough!
Goldendome Cave is such a beautiful place and so different than all the other caves. 25 dollar entry fee to get your vehicle into the park, and you can get a discount with a "Native American " card or disabled American discount.
I really loved this place. So much to explore in ways that aren't usual for a national park. And the sudden change from farmland to lava beds is startlingly fast. The rangers at the visitor center are especially helpful for both advice on what to explore and what to bring with you.
It's a really good idea to bring your own bike helmet and what lights you can, you'll need two on each of you and remember that your cell phone can count as a backup. But it's also good to have a backpack and a head lamp to leave your hands free for the difficult parts of the paths.
But if you forget everything the Visitor Center can supply you. And the darkness in the stone is pretty breathtaking.
We also managed to lock our keys on the car, and the law enforcement rangers were good enough and kind enough to break gently into it car and get us back on our way. I'm really grateful they could help.
Wow! This place was just amazing! It's a long drive to get to the visitor center but don't be discouraged! Seeing the lava fields on the way in is totally worth it! We aren't experienced cavers and had the dog with us but the ranger suggested Mushpot Cave for a quick cool experience and boy was he right! It's an easy walk in and it's paved and lit the whole way. It takes about 15-25 minutes to walk to the end and back and it's just amazing! Honestly one of the coolest experiences ever!
Amazing above and below ground. Take the time to go to the visitor center and talk to the rangers, it's well worth it!
The most surprising amazing place, so incredible to go in the caves and feel the temperature change.if u go in take a sweatshirt it's COLD! The coolest things we've seen!
Such a fun national monument! Over ten different caves to explore at all difficulty levels. Gloves and helmet are required for the difficult ones by me. Knee pads would be nice. They sell helmets for like 9 bucks at the visitor center.
Worthy stop on any trip. Fascinating geology. Dress appropriately for an awesome spelunking adventure. Park rangers were informative and helpful. Really interesting adventure opportunity.
