Marukai Market reviews
20My favorite Japanese supermarket in the Bay Area, reasonably priced and with a great variety of otherwise difficult-to-source ingredients. I used to shop here regularly on my many business trips to Cupertino/Palo Alto in the 2010s. As others have mentioned too, their outstanding sushi corner gives competitors a run for their money.
Always clean, shoppers are polite and friendly. Top quality fresh seafood and produce. Reasonable prices
3-1/2 stars. Lack variety and prices for same products about 20% higher than Korean grocery stores. But, many Japanese food staples actually come from Japan.
Good place for sushi dinner (supermarket grade of course) and dessert! Inari sushi is my favor. They have two different packing: 4 big pieces and 5 small pieces. Small pieces taste better! Tarami Mix Yoghurt Dessert is new for me, yummy!
Great little Japanese grocery store. Offers more reasonable pricing for imported goods then some of the other Japanese grocery stores in the area.
Great place to get all sorts of Japanese grocery and small home stuff. Also offer nice selection of Japanese skin care and makeup products. If you just like quick bites, they have prepared Japanese bento and sushi boxes.
The market is very clean. Kids feel treasure hunting here.
Great selection of Japanese candy & beef from Japan. Fish selection is fresh & lotsa favorites from Hawaii. Good selection of Portuguese sausage & quality Japanese sake.
Their fresh fish is very good, specially the sashimi cuts that are ready to be sliced and served. Lunchboxes are also very good, but make sure to get there early to grab one, otherwise it will all be gone by noon.
Meats and vegetables are great, but keep in mind that the price is a bit higher than you would find in other supermarkets.
And of course, the Japanese goodies are what you would expect: the real deal imported from Japan (and some other Asian countries), including kitchenware, snacks, sweets and beverages.
Last but not least, don't forget to get a yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) sample:)
The best place to get meat for hot pot / shabu shabu. They also have broth and very good quality veggies.
Better than San Jose Japantown markets. Love that they even give you ice to transport the seafood
Tied with Mitsuwa for my favorite Japanese market in South Bay. Love their sushi/sashimi selection and I find the prices are slightly more reasonable than Mitsuwa.
Clean Asian grocery store. Has lots of Asian beauty stuff as well as items typically only seen in Japan. Be warned, it's always super cold in the store.
Good selection of Japanese basic ingredients, small wares, small produce section, some personal care items. Quality meats/fish. Sweets/snacks. Prices average.
My go to Japanese supermarket. I used to go to Mitsuwa but I feel the prices here are better (maybe not for everything, but it's still pretty dang good).
A good Japanese supermarket that can find different import food and merchandise from Japan and Asia.
Lots of parking spaces, I don't have to struggle so much like Misuwa. The market is also next to Daiso store and other restaurants. This is my favorite place for Bento boxes (under $7 and so much fish)
Our go to place for Japanese supplies that you can't find at a large chain grocery store, fresh Gombei tofu, shabu meat, and sashimi. If you have never been walk in check it out, try something new. Membership is $1.
Went here to pickup hot pot ingredients because I was craving. We decided to get fancy and try the most expensive and second most expensive Kobe hot pot meat, along with the basic Kobe and lamb. The most expensive Kobe did have an amazingly soft texture, but wasn't too excited about the flavor of any of the meat. Was satisfied with the produce we got. Really liked the mizkan citrus ponzu, did not like the mizkan goma shabu sesame sauce. Lines were long to checkout when we there midday on a weekend. People there are super nice!
A southern California based chain I can't live without. Glad there is a store here in silicon valley. It's far from home but I go almost every week.
Good selection of Japanese groceries. Their deli sushi selection is fresh and good. Sashimi is always fresh and high quality. Great way to get your favourite beef cuts. They fly in Japanese Kobe consistently. Look out for Japanese beer going on sale throughout the summer season as they have good prices for Sapporo, Kirin and Asahi.
