Oh my this is tough I few months back I had a dog a pit bull named Susto man I loved him I am currently homeless but I worked and had a trailer to live in my dog got really sick I thought he has parvo I was so scared I went to the store and when I got back he was gone I immediately looked for him but nothing finally I went online to look for found dogs on the website I found my baby there I explained what happened and these people omg the employees were the bomb they were my angels they did everything possible to get my dog back and even gotten free medical care for him with medicine he was getting back to his old self again they did everything for me and Susto i thank you all so much.

Update: in the area where I park my trailer it's not a good place at all I was asleep and my dog Susto was outside in the sun chillin when I heard to gun shots I ran outside to find my beloved Susto dead on the ground I made a police report and nothing else was done I miss my Susto so much I can't stop thinking about him I love you poppa I miss you and I'm sorry for what happened to you. Please adopt, don't shop! You can adopt dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters here. Occasionally you'll find domestic pet rats, reptiles, and chinchillas up for adoption as well.
Absolutely all of the volunteers here are amazing, kind, and caring. Things can be overwhelming for staff and volunteers and the amount of animals they have to care for, plus assisting the public. The level of care for all the animals need to step up but they're working with what the city funds them. I digress.
There's a small parking lot but also street parking. A few areas in the shelter for meet-n-greet of your potential furry companion.

I'm saddened they are incredibly understaffed. Visited last Friday to possibly adopt a dog. They were only accepting appointments, and I completely understand! Ran into a senior citizen man who was Spanish-speaking only. He was under the impression he had a 4pm appointment to humanly put down his beloved 14 year old dog who was blind and had bloody lesions all over her body. The worker at the door said if he surrendered the dog he'd suffer and die an agonizing death. I decided to pay for him to put his beloved "Snuggles" down at the Highland Park animal Hospital on York. They were amazing BTW! I really hope they could allocate funds to employ someone who speaks Spanish in order to properly inform non English-speaking people about the services offered at the shelter.

Best Christmas gift ever this year was adopting my cat Sox. The shelter knew her as Princess. I’m definitely going back soon to adopt another kitty ️ staff was super helpful and process was fast once we picked the right kitty.

I made a report more than a week ago and they still haven't done anything, my neighbor has three unvaccinated or unregistered dogs and I have minor children and it's dangerous and that worries me

Staff was very helpful and friendly. Our visit was on a Tuesday so we walked in without an appointment and came home with our new cat buddy Bruce. Paid 0$ thanks to north central. Thank you

Would be a better place if new management cared about the animals and let volunteers work with behavioral dogs in the isolation kennels: (poor dogs are already going through a rough time and volunteers make their day better. The shelter is going downhill with management, shouldn’t be getting volunteers in trouble for interacting with the animals in the isolation kennels.

We surrendered or beloved dog just after Thanksgiving. It was a painful decision as she was a fantastic dog. Everyone liked her. We loved her! We tried everything to get her rehomed but were unsuccessful. She is a senior dog, over 90lbs, and has some major mobility issues and an infection. We couldn’t find housing with her and couldn’t pay her medical expenses.

In all honesty, i thought the process when we arrived for our appt at North Central would be better.maybe that’s my fault. However, the lady who helped us was very very shaming. Clearly viewed us as terrible ppl who were letting go of a dog because they barked once or didn’t fit in with the decor. That is not the case. We love the dog. She did not ask us if we wanted to say goodbye and I thought i’d get to be there for an exam to determine whether she could be adopted again. She simply took the leash and led her to the back. I will never know what happened to the dog we took car of for 2 years. I cannot think bout it or i get emotional. My husband still cries and mourns the loss of his dog.

Please have more compassion/empathy towards those who enter the facility. No one with a good heart WANTS to do this but sometimes thats the only option that’s best for the life of the dog. I’m a very loving person and truly adored that dog. I did not deserve that treatment. I would recommend going somewhere else even if its a drive.please note this is where we adopted her from too.

I dropped in to pick up some much needed food for my dog, Danger. The people here are friendly and passionate about what they do.

I have been here three times now recently after my kitten passed away. Every employee I came in contact with was so sweet and helpful! They let me hold and pet each kitty I was interested in and brought them to other rooms so I could interact with them! I'm sorry to see all the bad reviews because I have had three amazing experiences here! The facility is gorgeous and clean as well

The volunteers were great and helpful, kennels were all clean and I could ask to take a dog or two out to the large yard to meet and get to know them. Pretty easy process inside with paperwork and my pet was ready to go home 45 mins after I walked inside to start the process.on a Saturday, too!

There are some amazing volunteers but cranky staff there. The volunteers were amazing and had love for the animals. The workers who were behind the desk was whatever about it. I ended up staying at the shelter for 3 hours meeting both cats and dogs and deciding on which new family member to bring home. I heard the staff talking about how long I stayed and the hispanic woman behind the desk was unhelpful and unfriendly. It was my first time adopting so I had so many questions esp with vaccinations and whatnot, but she was impatient and unhelpful while the volunteers were soo helpful and kind. I would quote what the volunteers told me to the woman and she would blow them off like “I don’t care or know what they told you, but this this this, ” which was really confusing. Nevertheless, I adopted two kittens and apparently, they are free. They have been free for a while so if you are looking for a cat to adopt, please come and adopt these beautiful fur balls. I just paid $5 for the box to carry them in. I think the hispanic woman behind the desk left a bad taste to the experience, but overall, great place and friendly volunteers!

Overall it was an interesting experience, the staff that I interacted were decent enough, the place itself was very modern, and clean. I recently adopted a dog, I was under the impression that since I was told the dog was up for adoption on a certain day to be there by a certain time and that'd be it, but no, I was later informed that since it wasn't spayed I'd have to wait an additional week, further more, I'd have to pick up at a local Vet Hospital. I was only allowed to spend 5 minutes with her before she was taken back. Sigh. It was both uncomfortable and an emotional moment. Anyway, on a positive note I was able to finally get her home, she's healing well from surgery, she's adjusting very well!
