Oakland Museum of California reviews
17Great architecture, beautiful art work, honest, clear-eyed history section. I love the Oakland Museum. They had to close their Afro-futurism show because of leaking ceilings. Still a wonderful way to spend the day.
What a gem! There are three levels of Art, History and Natural History. Then there's the excellent temporary exhibits too. A reasonable day will include two of the levels. Plan to come back for more! The collections are real and tangible, like the Smithsonian. The curation is the most interesting part for me. The counter-point of ideas is fascinating. The whole place seems to invite thought and reward curiosity. Also, every one is friendly and welcoming! I can't wait to go back!
Had not visited since before the cement cracked. This museum has three exhibit areas: art, history natural history. There's a special exhibit hall and a (maybe closed) cafe
I couldn't find any koi in the koi pond
Easily one of my favorite museums. The gardens are beautiful and lovely to walk around or sit and enjoy the afternoon. The exhibits here are so thoughtful, inspiring, interesting and always well put together.
Love this spacious museum. Great for kids because there are outside spaces to explore and many different topics: art, history, geology, geography.
The current afrofuturism exhibit is small but fantastic. Octavia Butler’s handwritten notes!
There's so much to see and explore. 2 hours is not sufficient. It's cool how the exhibits from the ground floor up lead you through history. Definitely a place for exploration when you can be open to all that the museum has to offer/teach. Great for families, small groups and individuals. Everyone can explore on their own based on their interests or explore together, there are some really good conversation pieces and prompts.
We were there for only a short time, however we learned a lot about California's history and viewed a little art. I enjoyed viewing the Black Power section, telling a little bit of the story on The Black Panther Party. I'd visit again.
The Oakland Museum is a gem.
Alongside the beautiful Lake Merritt.
I have been coming here since the early 80's. Such a special place.
An engineering marvel, BTW.
You must spend time in the Garden.
I work in the food area cleaning at night. The morning staff cleans daily and we clean again at night. Every one is very friendly and helpful.
This was my first visit to this museum, and I will definitely return. The exhibits are wonderfully curated and thought-provoking. There are many interactive exhibits and multi-media installations. It was most enjoyable.
The museum is affordable for everyone! I really enjoy the exhibits and the remodeled garden area is very relaxing where you can forget you're in an urban city.
Always has great special exhibits, definitely worth the extra $5 to see. Wonderful garden area as well.
Afrofuturist is super dope. If you love African culture. This is the exhibit for you. Very interactive!
I love it. Very educational. I learned so much today. I would definitely go back again. Having Black exhibit, and being recognize as people, was very moving to me.
Love the space especially pin the once monthly friday nights whereby entire family's come out to do crafts listen to music, and see a museum show. The space is beautiful, spacious and welcoming! People on food stamps get in for $1 or free!
I miss the event, “Friday nights at the museum”! It was an amazing event for downtown Oakland. Food trucks, live music, dancing! Please bring this back! This is deeply missed by many.
