This was an excellent, very dynamic and fairly challenging out and back hike. I think doing it in the summer would be pretty brutal as there is limited tree cover (due to a burn scar from previous fire (s) but doing this in the winter, spring, or late fall would be great. We just went over the weekend (early feb after some rains) and were pleased with all the lush grass and variety of wildflowers already popping up. There are spectacular views, especially at the top. Wear sturdy hiking shoes/boots and the terrain is rocky and there are some slides. Bring water. It's straight up and back, ~8.5 miles total.

Lovely hike, excellent views, options to go Table Rock or Aetna Springs. Used by MTBers who seem quite respectful.
From Calistoga it's up hill for a good bit.
Best in Fall or Spring gets hot summer. Bring water.
Blessings and enJOY

Great trailhead with a few free parking spaces although it's never super crowded. Trail itself is free but they have a donation box in front to support the trail maintenance efforts. Easy trail, well maintained, wide path and mostly stable with some bits of loose gravel in certain locations. Was able to do it slides/flip-flops without too much trouble although flat-soled athletic shoes would be a better choice. Out-and-back trail allows you to easily determine how much time the trail duration will take and impossible to get lost. Beautiful views of the town below, multiple wood peckers on the trees next to the trail.

This trail started out easy but gets difficult as you go. The area is very dry as of Oct 2022. There are lots of trees down once you get to the top. - Holes place

We went in May and I wish we went earlier in the morning as it got very warm and the shade was limited. The overall trail is wide which is nice as you can walk next to someone comfortably. There are a few scenic views, but it is not overwhelming at least in the first 2 miles. If we did it again, I would go earlier in the day and plan to do 4 miles up vs 2 in hopes that there are some better views further up the trail.

It's a healthy hike. Especially if your drawn to hiking all the way to the China camp! LOts of ancient volcanic sights. Enjoy!

I would definitely recommend this hike. It is a tough hike for people who aren't hiking regularly. Very rewarding with great views. Take plenty of water, you'll need it. Lot's of wild life so be respectful of the area.

Good "trail" for exercise. It's a beat up old fire road / wagon road. Not maintained at all. Views of, you guessed it, rich folks Napa valley wineries, Mmmmmmm. But let's face it, youre here because your choices are limited with all the swanky private landownership and relative lack of land with any elevation difference to it, so in that respect it's a good trail for the area. However compared to anywhere else in CA, outside of Napa and Sonoma counties, its only marginally satisfactory. And the parking is limited, and weird. You may enjoy the neat volcanic rocks and the history of the trail according to my sig other. Maybe I say, maybe.

Gorgeous trail! Hiked it with my dog and went to mile 5.5 and turned around. Saw a mountain lion!

I've been hiking this trail since the late 70's and have always considered this one of the finest places to hike in Napa Valley. It's especially pretty this time of the year in February. Highly recommend this trail!

Awesome hike! Not too difficult at all. It was 10 miles one way. We brought two cars and left them at either end of the trail head, so we only had to go one way
