Planet Granite Sunnyvale reviews
27People saying this is an awesome gym are not coming here during the weeknight rush. I'm happy with the setting, and the space is huge with a variety of climbs that you could never get tired of — but, woah, is it crowded. When I went, it was packed so much that I didn't feel safe climbing. And I was there for 2 hours.a relentless stream of people coming in every moment. Go to The Studio in San Jose. Much more relaxed, and much less crowded.
Awesome gym. Good setting and lots of variety of walls for toprope + bouldering, including cracks. Crazy packed in the evening but you can still always find something to do. Only downside is the brown walls look kind of ugly nowadays but not much you can do there.
Pros:
- lots of routes with a good amount of variety
- large workout area
- yoga classes are great
Cons:
- can get very busy sometimes
- beware of some of the high intensity training classes they offer. I had a bad experience last Saturday where the instructor seemed to have put very little effort into planning the workout. She was making the warmup up on the fly and we didn’t even stretch. But the main concern was that she instructed us to do kettlebell swings with very dangerous form (swinging it over top the head) and said to use dumbbells with one arm to do it when the kettlebells were all taken. I threw out my back in the first five mins and could barely walk for days. I hobbled out of the class right after I was hurt and the instructor didn’t even check in. I regret going and have lost confidence in the quality of trainers. I can’t even use my expensive climbing membership this week due to this injury. Please make sure your staff understand how to do safe movements before they instruct large groups.
Very disappointed with the slack line situation. It’s been broken for more than a month now. I’ve talked to the front desk about it multiple times and they still haven’t fixed it. This is not the first time it has happened either. It goes down for months at a time
Overcrowded and expensive.
Back in 2012 (when I started my membership) it was great - lot's of free routes to climb, only $70 per month.
Today it's hard to find a route if you come in the afternoon/evening. Parking is a problem too, and the fee is up to $100.
Great place for bouldering and wall climbing. The staff is super nice and helpful, and the safety procedures make sense. Definitely would recommend!
Planet Granite is one of the best climbing gym franchises, and this is probably their best location. They offer everything for top rope and bouldering, with lots of heady lead climbing walls too. They have the standard two part belay test for top rope first, then lead climbing. Tallest wall gets over 40ft. The setters are great. They do leave grigris on the toprope ropes, but bring your own rope and belay device for leading.
PG is a great gym with an awesome community and friendly staff. People here are generally courteous and have good etiquette. Yes, afternoons and early evenings are super busy, but that’s pretty normal for any gym. Mornings usually aren’t bad. I’ve been a member here for over a year, and they’ve been constantly improving the facilities here. It’s not cheap, but I feel like the quality of service makes the cost fair.
Great gym, the setters come up with some solid problems. I love all of the other options you have besides climbing, cardio equipment, free weights, plenty of bar bells for your olympic lifts, plus the sauna this place has it all. One thing that really make this place stand out is how everything is spacers out, you never feel cramped.unless you try to go during the weekend.
Only complaint I wish the staff and gym enforced people using the restroom with their climbing shoes on. It’s gross to know that the holds your grabbing might have piss splash on them.
This place was fun! I went here for a birthday party. The only thing is that it is expensive and there is no one to belay you. I like Stanford because we can go for free, even if it is smaller
Love this gym! I usually only go early in the mornings because it does get really crowded. But the staff are always super friendly and helpful and the gym equipment is also decent.
The best part is the amount of space and light that really brightens up the place and makes it enjoyable to spend 3 hours there!
Fun gym with a huge variety of options for climbing. My boyfriend has a monthly membership which allows for him to bring 1 guest per month so I get to join once in a while.
Considering I have 0 climbing experience, this gym allows for learning and experimenting with no judgement. Everyone seems supportive and helpful as you climb!
Love this place. Buy your own gear and hit those bouldering and top rope walls! And if your bad ass enough, get those lead climbs! My only problem is that this place gets packed and it starts to smell like feet
Best (only) climbing gym in the area. Pretty good and immensely popular. Can get extremely crowded. Wide variety of routes and a serious workout area.
Friendly and helpful staff, constantly changing routes, and a large community of regulars. This place is the best of the bay.
This place is like my home for the past 6 months.
I took up climbing when I first moved here and immediately signed up for the monthly membership. There are new climbs almost every month (they rotate the walls they pick for path-setting) and facility is always clean.
I also took a belay class (free for members) and a bouldering class here and they were both great! Now I still go almost every day and made some friends!
Nice facilities, and usually interesting routes. My favorite part is all thhe different angles of the walls that you can encounter on a single climb. Gets VERY busy in the evenings
Nice staff but tends to be crowded and is quite expensive. A family package would be nice (with 2 adults and 4 kids under 14, it costs us an arm and a leg to go and no one gets to do much climbing since we have to belayers for 6 people). When my husband and I go together we like it but as a family experience we're disappointed every time.b I would say it's a 3.5 star rating
Great if you go during office hours (9-4pm), which is the case for me.
Otherwise, it's way too busy.
Even at noon time during the week, classes are at full capacity.
Restrooms are not large enough for such a crowd (for instance, only two sinks and toilet seats). Be prepared to wait in line.
I like the facility, location, parking, and all that comes with the membership; the walls, the weight room, and the classes. The staff is great and easy to work with, too.
