15Very nice area. Ride through old growth trees was enjoyable and the conductor/narrator did a good job. We preferred the uncovered cars so we could see the trees better.
Forty minutes away from Silicon Valley you can enter what feels like magical forest with huge redwoods, curvy paths and little streams. There is a cool breeze from the coast and moisture in the air, so dress warmly. Walk around and appreciate living beings that has been around for thousands of years.
Had an absolute blast, the train ride was amazing and very informative, thank you Kevin the conductor! 109 year old narrow gage steam engine going up through the redwoods was an amazing experience.
Loved this open car steam train. The conductor really added to the ride with all his knowledge about the area and the train! The view of the redwoods was awesome as the train winded around the mountains! I highly recommend this ride!
This is a very unique experience, especially if you're a train buff. Take the forest train. We're talking almost 9% grades, switchbacks and a Shay geared steam locomotive. Good luck finding that many other places. Conductor narration was very informative and knowledgeable. Even though the trestles have been burned for 50 years, the switchback climb that replaced them is just as good, if not better, when getting up to the summit. You can get up close and personal with the staff and the equipment. My 4 year old loved it. Will probably do the Santa Cruz train next time. We went during the holidays so it's extra special with lots of lights, and the forest train had refreshments and Santa.
I absolutely love this place. Parked in the N Big Trees Park Rd Parking lot ($10). Did a 6 mile hike first. At the end of hike, from parking lot, walked across railroad tracks. Had lunch and then enjoyed a train ride through the redwoods. So many trials in this area. Would recommend for a nice walk.
If you are looking to ride the train, I would recommend purchasing tickets in advance. No guarantee there will be tickets left if you wait to purchase them once in park.
**tip: if you park in a different parking lot like I did, when purchasing train tickets, they automatically charge you for parking. After purchasing tickets, call office of Roaring Camp and they will refund the $10.
Great old steam train ride in the most amazingly beautiful redwood forest. Nice conductor/ your guide was very informative and entertaining
Four seasons fun, Giant RedWoods, as old as 2000
Years, unique protected environment.
Safe ride to the largest grove of Sequoias where we enjoyed my Grandaughter's wedding amidst these 250 foot towering marvels. 10/21/2021.
Great local tourist attraction! Steam trains from the early 19th century! George is the best conductor and story teller! If you like Trains this is must visit
I have been here a number of times over the years. I have always enjoyed it. If I remember correctly, my last visit was in August of 2007. I remember it being expensive, at least more than what I was expecting to pay. The steam train ride is very enjoyable, however, don't wear white clothes because you will get coal ash and tree sap on you during the ride. I would like to return some day and I would recommend.
My niece had her wedding here. The train ride was beautiful. The wedding site was peaceful and so awesome!
The reception was also held there and it was very well done.
Staff were wonderful! Super friendly and helpful!
I was a bridesmaid in a wedding held here. It was absolutely beautiful. One of the cooler weddings I've been to. The tour on the train is great and the big barn for the reception was amazing. The staff was extremely helpful and nice.
Amazing historical replica of days gone. The power of steam and Iron is breathtaking. Weaving its way through the Giants of the pacific north west. We will return and hope to take the train to the boardwalk in the spring.
We attended my friend's wedding here Nov 2021. The staff was very friendly! My hubby and I had a wonderful time! We took a little train ride through the forest and it was beautiful! There is a gift shop. A little pond with ducks. A nice covered bridge. The bathrooms are very clean! I highly recommend!
