This "credit union" totally screwed my credit for no good reason. I stopped using my checking account in march due to moving out of the area and switching to another bank. I forgot to close the account. Unbeknownst to me, I accidentally selected my sdccu checking account to make a payment on a credit card. This put my account in the negative. I had no idea and was never called about it. The only correspondence I recieved was an email about an "e notice" from sdccu, which I ignored because i figured it was regarding a statement being available or something innocuous. They didn't bother to give me a curtesy before reporting the collection to the credit bureaus, dinging my flawless credit report. My fico score went from 780 to 646. My plans to purchase a home are severely impacted now. I thought credit unions were supposed to be member owned and consumer friendly; not this one! I found out about the overdraft completely by chance, i thought i had a small positive balance in the account so i logged in to transfer it out and close the account. By that time, they had already closed my account and i was unable to pay it online. I called in and they informed me i would have to mail the balance or come in person to pay it. I happened to be back in California temporarily for work so i planned on going on the weekend to the branch to pay it off. Before i made it there it had already hit my credit! This is so disappointing that SDCCU made no effort to inform me of this tiny $220 debt before seriously screwing up my life. Who knows how many tens of thousands of dollars this will cost me interest in the future, if i can even qualify for financing now.

Professional and courteous staff. Convenient location for me. All of my banking and credit accounts are with SDCCU.
A few years ago, because of a bounced paycheck, I overdrew my account and bounced a couple of checks. After discussing it with the branch manager, she understood and agreed to waive half of the overdraft charges.

Highly recommended!

Last Friday I received the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I came in to the branch after requesting to get off work early to make it there before closing because I, like 25,000 other members, was having difficulties logging into their new app where I manage everything regarding my finances. When I arrived, I was told that I had been charged over $470 in overdraft fees in 6 days. I was completely in shock and asked how that could be possible. When the bank teller grabbed someone her senior I was then shamed for, "clearly not being able to manage my money. " I took ownership for not making the switch the the new app sooner, but also explained that I had called support many times (who were experiencing high call volumes) and when they called me back I was at work. She then proceeded to watch me start to cry and with incredible smugness said, "I could write a letter to the branch manager if I wanted, but it wouldn't do anything. " I always own my part in things, but treating your loyal and usually happy customers with such disrespect is unacceptable, especially for someone who said she has been with the bank for 23 years. After this experience, I sadly will be closing my account and looking for a bank that is there to guide and support their customers instead of emotionally shame them.

Open a checking account elsewhere. They also check your credit score to see if you get approved.

This branch totally changed my views on this bank as a whole. Special Thanks to Natasha and Jennifer for all your info on planning for a successful rebuild of my credit. Where they were not able to help firsthand, the employees were able to offer advice from their real-world experience as to the best way going about completing certain tasks to obtain a certain goal, financially. If you are a person with limited means or have made stupid mistakes in the past, go in with the correct info and you will find a place to rebuild from past mistakes, financially.

Horrible! They acted as if they could care less about me or my account! Very cold and impersonal.

Terrible phone service. Prepare to wait on the phone FOREVER before talking to someone. If you want to speak to someone on the phone, find another bank.
