Sumac Modern Street Food, San Francisco CA

LOVE this place, every one I have try their food is HOOKED! The banana bread pudding is the best I’ve ever had (and not even a huge banana bread pudding fan in the first place)!

One of the best smells in the city is walking past this small to-go shop. The kofte bowl comes with five meatballs, rice and a delightful chickpea side dish. I really enjoy the collard soup from “soupchu”, the sister restaurant living in the same place. Their variety of dips and sauces (hummus, cacik, muhammara) are quite flavorful, ranging from creamy to sweet and sharp.

The prices are as steep as the hill the restaurant is on top of, though they aren’t unheard of in this area.

The issue with this place is that they regularly forget stuff or don’t communicate when they run out of things. One time, we ordered (paid for) extra pink sauce and it didn’t come in the stapled bag. Another time, they didn’t include utensils like they usually do. Last time, they didn’t give us the acme bread that came with our soups. Hope they iron that out at some point.

Great food. The portions are huge. Me and my girlfriend was barely able to finish the food. Everything we tried was delicious and fresh. A lot of options to choose from since they have 3 concepts in the same place.

They wouldn’t accept my package which I don’t understand because this looks like a FedEx to me. 1 star

My work team (Embarcadero, 130 people) stumbled upon Sumac about 2 years ago when we started coming back to the office and having lunch to together. The food it so good, it was always one of the THE most popular choices each week. Fast forward to this month when I found out they now offered CATERING! Music to my ears as I now provide lunch for the team each Thursday. So, we tested it out last week and my team LOVED it. A few said it was the best lunch we've had:) The site was easy to use. The delivery rep came on time. They provided little signs (always helpful). And the food was amazing (chicken, beef/lamb meatballs, falafels, lentil cakes, veggies, hummus, rice, pita,) EVERYTHING was gone. I think there was 2 pieces of baklava and a tad bit of chickpea salad left. SUCCESS! Thanks to Deniz for calling to let me know about the catering option. Thanks to Sumac for helping me look like a ROCKSTAR to my team.

Oh my goodness. The food is sooooo bad here. I can see why Californians would like it but as a middle eastern, I absolutely did not enjoy my food and neither did my boyfriend. The prices are also unjustified!

A business that cares about deliciousness and cleanliness. Each of the dishes is beautiful and memorable. I definitely recommend it. I would also like to thank the friendly staff.

Why does this place have three separate names / aliases as if it’s a fugitive on the run? Today they added a fourth name - gastrobot; Perched at the top of Russian Hill, pilgrims climb the steep hills to get to this apparent Holy Grail of Middle Eastern food; I am perplexed as their Red Lentil Balls Rice Bowl incinerated my mouth and I had to call the fire department. Their best dish is the dips and the classic hummus but if you try asking for extra pita from them, they will demand your first born;

Sumac offers flavor-packed dishes! The fusion of tastes is great. However, the extended wait times for pickup at this to-go joint, within Gastrobot, can test your patience. Worth it for the culinary adventure, considering prices are on the higher side.

Expensive but perfectly cooked middle-eastern food. I'm a vegetarian and have some food sensitivities but every time I'm in the area I would go there despite traffic and distance! Their quality of ingredients speaks for itself. I love it!

Great food. The red lentil balls salad was extra tasty and unique. Only issue. Uber eats told me my meal was ready, but I still had to wait 15 minutes when I arrived.

Man this place is as good as it's rubbery meatballs. It's not that bad, but my god the serving sizes make no sense. I finished all the meat and just had a giant bowl of chickpeas and rice left.it was so dry I couldn't finish it. The wrap was better but for $19 I've had better food at McDonald's.

It is a good take away shop that you van taste healthy Mediterranean food near Lombert Street. It is worth to taste the creativity from a group of chef.

Wish this was a sit down space. My salad was huge and delicious. My only complaint was that it was so full I couldn’t mix it at all, but there are worse problems to have.

Food is amazing, but also great service. They missed something in my order and when I called them, they immediately fixed the issue and brought the order to me. Thank you.

We bought a delicious salad at Sumac. We discovered this place at our first day here in SF and we want to give a special thanks to the wonderful lady behind the check-out named Gigi (Gunhan) who helped us very good. She was so welcoming to us that we definitely will be back at Sumac to buy a salad and speak to Gigi again!

Update: since they raised their prices, I can’t responsibly afford to eat here any more. I was always happy to pay a premium before, but paying an increase on top of the premium is hard to rationalize. I understand that food prices are increasing everywhere due to wholesale costs increasing, but it seems like the increase is not reasonable. It feels more like price gauging. This criticism isn’t specific just to Sumac, but for a lot of SF for that matter. What happened to places advertising reasonable prices? It seems like so many places now can just get away with price gauging

They don’t have dine in options, only take out. The food was insanely delicious. We ordered yogurt soup, red lentil ball rice bowl and organic chicken rice bowl. Everything was just amazing. They gave us warm pita for free. We highly recommend this place.
