Sumo Japanese Restaurant reviews
14Can’t figure out how to edit my other review so I’m posting a new one. Been going here for years it’s been amazing. Except for tonight there was poop in my shrimp. When I told them, I was informed by my server that management said “we don’t do that here” referring to deveining the shrimp… that’s disgusting. Management couldn’t even come and talk to me themselves…I didn’t notice it til the pieces towards the end because I always leave the two end pieces… I showed them, they wouldn’t do anything about it not even an apology from management for the issue and they brushed it off. Didn’t even care that it was in the shrimp because “we don’t do that here” … like that’s a health issue. I didn’t even ask for a full refund that’s my issue. I straight up said I don’t expect a full refund or refund due to almost finishing it before I found out I would never expect that for food I ate that much of all I asked for was it they could do half off on the plate of sushi but they essentially said you get nothing… not even a formal apology from management. I just think that this was so poorly handled by the company especially when I’m pulling it apart and showing it to you. Very unprofessional breaks my heart after going here for so long. The rest of the food that didn’t have shrimp tempura was good as always though. The experience just left a bad taste in my mouth literally and figuratively.

Friends had visited this place and recommended it as solid Japanese food and we all agreed with them. Sashimi was interesting, bento boxes were a great deal.
They used to have better management! Idk what happened after covid, they're all gone and that older lady (don't know her name but she has been there) act like she's the owner! So disrespectful, she was refusing to give us a to go box that probably doesn't cost 0.02 for them and expected me to pay %20 tip! When I asked her, she started yelling in front of everyone! Also the susemi oil smelled so old, when I mentioned her, she didn't even say sorry! Just start yelling again! Can't believe it.like, look at your place, now it's busy only during the happy hour, not like before and it's all bc of your poor customer service!
We always enjoy their food. Tonight we mistakenly ordered from their Ventura location. When I arrived at the NP location to pick up Joanne kindly helped me fix the problem.
Although it is not a traditional Japanese restaurant (it's run by Koreans) food is tasty and fresh. We loved the different rolls! The staff is friendly and there is a terrace to sit outside if you wish. Parking available in front.
It is okay. Although this is not my favorite, my friend wanted to try their lunch special so I went there yesterday. Their staff is very unfriendly and they all look mad. And if you want the actual sushi or Sashimi, this is not the best one to go to. But if you want something like teriyaki, rolls, donkatshu, etc, it's okay.
1dont listen to me about the food. I don't like Japanese food. Those who were with me said it was good. Nice place.
Food was good, they were flexible to modify to replace imitation crab with spicy tuna, server was good even though she was busy, overall happy
Old Review: Flew from NY just for sumo
New Review: I’m mortified and disgusted, they hand out the wrong food, then ask for it back and give it to other customers. That’s incredibly unsanitary
Great place. Can be very busy though. The combination (bento box) is worth the money. Steak and salmon were delicious. (Forgot to take a picture before I dung in.but pictured is chicken and salmon)
Overall: 10/5
Service: 10/5
Quality of food: 5/5
Price: 10/5
Happy hour: 3-6pm
- One of the best sushi we’ve had in a while! (The food was so good we dove right in and completely forgot to take pictures…until the very last roll)
- They knocked the ball outta park with their service, our server had the entire menu memorized! He was able to list all ingredients to any roll we had asked. All the servers continued to check in on us during our time there and made sure we were enjoying the food. We love how all the staff greeted us as we entered and exited as well. Overall, we felt really cared for and that made the dining experience even more memorable!
- Everything we ordered was delicious and definately hit the spot!
(Beef yakisoba, Philly roll, crunch roll, gyoza, squid nigiri, snow roll, kara roll)
- The best part is how affordable the menu was even without happy hour! (Most expensive roll was around $15)
Real sushi lovers should avoid this place. If you like Planet Sushi (blech) and are willing to tolerate sushi not as good as that, then you might like Sumo. It was inexpensive but.as most things.you get what you pay for.
The food is always good. The food server's they should be trained more on how to do a good job.
