SusieCakes - Del Mar reviews
19We ordered whole chocolate cake for a party and it was hard, dry, and crusty even after defrosting. Their butter cream was not good and it was way too sweet for our taste. Very disappointed about the quality of cake overall.
I rarely write reviews, I recently purchased a cake for my sister's birthday. The cake was DELICIOUS! I ordered the red velvet with the black vintage style and I am honestly happy. I will buy more cakes in the future. By the way everyone was very nice.
I am so glad that they offer a few gluten free options. The display here is absolutely lovely. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and they really make you feel like family. A few years ago they offered an amazing gluten free peanut butter stuffed cookie. I have purchased their regular cakes and cupcakes for my family and friends that are not gluten free and they were a hit everytime! Thank you Suzie Cakes!
The staff was pleasant but the carrot cake…for $8+ a slice is so not worth it. The slice was crumbled and not precise, ergo your slice is a partial slice. This place needs to me more consistent when cutting these already OVERPRICED tiny $8 slices of cake for its customers. I don’t plan to revisit. It’s happened twice & simply unacceptable.
Oh my goodness! Best chocolate cupcake I ever had in my life! I ate it in my car driving on the freeway. I almost turned around to get another one.
Regan, best customer service. Please give her a raise.
The BEST tasting cake I’ve had! I’m not usually a fan of cake but the coconut flavor was amazing. I ordered it for my wedding. It looked great and received many compliments from guests! Definitely recommend.
When paying 5 dollars for a cupcake you are expecting it to be the most amazing thing you ever tasted.well this was not it.i got the coconut and lemon cupcake as a gift to my mom.however that backfired, my mom took a bite of the lemon cupcake and SPIT it out because it was super dry almost like it was set out for a couple of days.in hopes of not wasting it we gave it to the dog but she even spit it out.overall this place doesn’t meet my mom’s and dog’s expectations.do better.
Bought two slices of cake, the Lemon and Tropical. The lemon cake was fresh and moist with the filling tasting like lemon pie! The buttercream frosting was too sweet and if I would have the option I would order a cake to be made without frosting! People there were extremely friendly and next time would like to try a freshly baked cookie or cupcake.
Great cookies. We got gluten free for a friend's birthday, and she loved them. I got my kids a regular chocolate chocolate chip to split. Cookies are filling and moist. A bit on the expensive side but it never stops us from going back.
First time coming here, and my last. I went to the one in Del Mar. Thought I would treat my family to a cupcake. When your spending almost $5.00 each for a cupcake. Your expecting something great. Definitely not what I got. I got 4 different flavors. The cake was dry and the buttercream was so oily tasting. The strawberry one you could barely taste any strawberry flavor. The chocolate one was not as dry. What a disappointment! If your craving a cupcake that is dry, flavorless and the feeling of biting into margarine. This is the place.
Underwhelmed by their cake- dense (which could be good), but when combined with dry makes a mouthful of dessicated crumbs that go down kinda harshly. We ordered 2 different slices and a cupcake and had the same dried-out mouth feel with each one, so I don't think it was a one off, unfortunately. Nothing Bundt Cakes is heads above this place if you like a moister cake.
That being said, the workers there were all super friendly and seemed like they genuinely enjoyed helping the customers in the store. They got an extra star just for the level of customer service those young women were providing to the patrons on a dreary Sunday afternoon.
I lover their coconut cupcakes and we always buy their red velvet cake too! Highly recommend this place to get the perfectly sweet and soft cakes in town!
All of our cupcakes were dry/stale. If your going to sell day old cupcakes then at least label them as such and/or discount them.
Pretty good overpriced cakes but shame on you Susie cakes for charging an additional ‘health care fee’. This cost your employees their tip and any future business from us.
Very cute cake, cookies and cupcake bakery, located in the shopping plaza across from Sephora and next to salt and straw. Awesome friendly, attentive staff. Prices are modest too high. They offer a vast variety of legendary cake flavors. Chocolate, coconut, carrot, lemon, red velvet just to name a few. Great cupcakes day one, but day 2 dry. When I say day 2, we bought a dozen and had 7 remaining. We attempted to each them the next day but they dried out. Which is extremely disappointing since the previous day we enjoyed them. With that being said, the cakes slices remained moist. I picked up a dozen of cupcakes chocolate, vanilla, lemon and red velvet cupcakes for a birthday party plus 3 slices of cake (carrot, lemon, and red velvet). Will try again
This SusieCakes is located at One Paseo. Staff are so friendly here. This place is really cute and nicely decorated.
We were craving a quick dessert so I just tried out the champagne cupcake. The cream was so buttery and delicious. Didn't taste much champagne though, it was more of just a vanilla cupcake. While the cream wasn't too sweet, the actual cake was overwhelmingly sweet to me! I wouldn't recommend if you're like me and more into Asian desserts that aren't too sweet, but it was definitely worth a try! The cake was one of the most moist cakes I've ever had. Not dry whatsoever.
We ordered a pumpkin and pecan pie for the Thanksgiving holiday. Pickup was a breeze and these were the best pies ever!
How to solve the mystery of the dry cupcake
Still looking.
Nothin Bundt Cakes didn't solve it.
Babycakes is in the ballpark but not on any base. And disappointingly
Susie Cakes also missed the mark.
While on the other hand, Susie Cakes extra whipped, smooth texture, light and fluffy formulation of the buttercream icing should be patented. As a firm believer that desserts can be eaten before dinner, this quarter eaten dessert was soooo sweet, it required a dinner and was not returned to.
I also tried the chocolate chip cookie. It's one of those cookies that didn't require milk. Crisp edges and just enough chocolate chips that won't make you thirsty. Yet, I still would choose Cravory, P-Zookie and the infamous Doubletree Cookies before Susie's.
I'm certain Susie's treats were a hit at PTA meetings, Girl Scouts shin-digs and bakery cook-offs. Perhaps the commercialization of the ingredients sabotaged the integrity.
What I find deceitful is the additional 22 cents for employee health fee that appeared on my receipt. If the business is not able to afford this cost either vote for socialism or a location that is affordable. And definitely make this signage transparent.

Ordered a slice of their coconut cake and it was absolutely delicious. Lady was so sweet to open the door for me since I had a baby stroller. Will definitely come back again.
