Tomales Point Trailhead reviews
18 Estimated 200 feet of elevation gains only. Good trail for anyone not so in-shape. Wide trails with gradual inclines at most. Sand is not deep and cushions your steps.
Mom's never been out here to see the Elk, so a definite must we finally could check off the list. We decided to only go as far as she had energy for. We brought lunch and sat on the trailside ground to eat.
She had no complaints as she's regaining her knee & ankle strength. The trail was ultimately smooth the whole way.
We only made it about a quarter of the way down the entire trail one way. I estimate about 8 to 9 miles round trip.
We came across a pair female Elk between some bushes at the first peak. Shortly later, we found the herd grazing on the oceanside slope. They were larger than I remembered! By the time we made it back to the car, I spotted movement on the distant hill from the parking lot. I pulled out the binoculars and gave them to mom telling her where I spotted the large buck Elk. It had a huge rack of antlers, about 2 feet high! It barely moved from the top of that hill for a good 15-20 minutes and mom was ecstatic: P
Beautiful non strenuously hike that offers beautiful coastal views of the California rugged shore, red tail hawks, pretty wild flowers & Tule elk are always out there!
Nice trail head. Lots of parking around. There is more parking at the end of the sloped road which is much nearer to McClures beach.
Beautiful views. Please note it is 10 miles of relatively flat trail to Tomales Point. Plan an entire day! Also dogs are not allowed. Saw many people with their dogs, and plenty of dog poo on the trail. The rangers need to start enforcing, this is ridiculous.
Beautiful lupine flowers in spring. Always magical to see the elk. The trail is unshaded so wear sunscreen and a hat. Relatively easy trail and you can turn back at any time. No bathrooms along the trail just FYI.
Nice coastal walk. Moderate under foot with slight elevation. Great views and plenty of wildlife.check out the elks!
Beautiful area and nice hike. It's farther than you think if you want to make it all the way to the end, but no matter how far you go the views are spectacular. You don't have to go all the way to see some elk, so if you want to cut it short you'll still have a good day.
Heed the "moderate" rating. Fortunately, you don't have to go all the way out. It's an out and back (not a loop) trail. Gorgeous views of Tomales Bay on one side and the ocean in the other. Dogs aren't allowed because of the elk. Bring water. Stop at the restroom before heading out - it's at the bottom parking lot, at the beachhead.
The hike to the trailhead is lovely. There were a few gray whales swimming near Tomales Point trailhead.
Absolutely gorgeous hike that follows right along the coast and takes you to an amazing overlook of the coast. Wildflowers all over the place. Big herds of elk. Cool little tour of an old dairy farm at the beginning
Lovely hike in spring when the lupin are blooming. There’s lots of ups and downs since the hills are rolling and there’s ocean views almost consistently.
The trial also goes through the elk reserve, so there’s a very good chance of seeing plenty!
The first 2 miles is probably the best for ocean and cliff views. The rest is quite muddy and nondescript on a foggy day, so not my favorite choice in the area. You can see elk on the hills if you're lucky. Very exposed trail so keep sun protection and water in mind on a sunny day. Parking available at Pierce Point Ranch.
Very beautiful. Tons of flowers of all colors. Tons of elk. Breathtakibg views and peaceful.
I loved this hike! Why? Well, this part of California is beautiful and peaceful. The hike has one small hill but otherwise pretty easy. So it’s a leisurely 3 hour round trip hike. AND… you get to see elk only 10-15 feet away. I don’t mean 1 or 2. More like 40! Don’t bother them though. Just watch.
Pro tip: Just saw them now in April and their antlers are just starting to grow. I’m Sep/Oct, those antlers will be huge! So decide which time is best for you.
Incredible trail, one of the best in the world. Views of tomales bay to the right, miles of ocean to the left, and green hills and tule elk in between
Amazing views for a hike that’s just long with not much incline! You can see dozens of elk on the path as well.
Be sure to take a detour to McClure Beach trailhead further down on the road (2-3 minutes) for restrooms before starting as there are no restrooms on this trail.
Amazing hike. ~9 miles out and back. Lots of wildlife (elks, coyote and birds) along the way. Def a must
A tranquil place with a lot of parking spots. Well-documented signs and good and clean facilities including bathrooms. What impressed most is that the views are tranquil and peaceful along the West Coast!
