Volare Italian Restaurant, San Diego CA

The waitress was more concerned about going home, doing her side work fixing condiments rather than getting us help. Had to ask for bread and took 45 minutes for the meal with nobody there. Then I don't know if they hired a new cook or what, but the plate I ordered looked like it was made for a 10 year old. Been coming back here for years, not anymore. Me and my friends are avid San Diego local eaters. This place is not worth the money or what it use to be by any means.

Worth the wait. Authentic Italian food. Gets very busy and you might have to wait a bit, but take a friend and enjoy the visit.

Daily specials are a definite win. Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere. I felt like I was in someone's home as a guest. Highly recommend for date nights and family dinners.

Great place. Clean and friendly. We had a hungry large party fresh out of the airport and they were so great to us. A small place and delicious food.

Small place that's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. We were seated promptly and service was great. Portion sizes were generous and flavors were great. Very fresh and made to order.

I was really excited to try this place (good reviews) and the staff was very kind. Unfortunately, I won’t be back because it was not clean and the chicken parmesan had no flavor. It tasted like Olive Garden’s step cousin.

The food was terrible and overrated nothing near an Italian food or restaurant and there was a cockroach inside the restaurant and it smelled a bit weird when I entered and the food took so long to bring it to us there are way more better Italian restaurant in little Italy in downtown

While on vacation Wanted to eat at a family owner restaurant and its exactly what we got great food great service. One of a kind and delicious

Simply some the best Italian-American food in San Diego! What a great place! The food and service was excellent. Will be back and highly recommended for you to go on Wednesday or Thursday night.

VERY small place, quite rundown and dirty. We waited an extremely long time to give our orders after being sat. Not one soul in the place smiled. The boy who seated us seemed very displeased to be there and didn't speak. The older woman who eventually took our order (owner?) had the personality of a cactus and took her sweet time with everything. It was like we interrupted her evening.

We knew drink refills cost, but we still didn't get them when we asked, twice. My meal came with a salad but she didn't ask if I wanted dressing. I'm not convinced I would have gotten it if I hadn't asked about dressing options. Her reaction was to snidely remark, "there's no such thing as Italian, so dont ask. " Awkward! Food was ok. I got chicken parmesan and husband had pasta.

Very odd experience, would not go back!

I give it 2 stars only because the water with lemon and soft drink was good and bought out at a reasonable time (and the tiramisu I took to go). However, I ordered the chicken parmigiana and they brought back out chicken that was entirely old and tried to cook it and put new sauce on it and cheese to make it “look” good. But I could not even cut my chicken with the knife they provided. I asked the waiter if it was even chicken because it was super brown/black on one side and tan on the other. I swear I said a little prayer asking God to not make it so I did not have to complain about anything, because I was the only black person at that Italian place. So I got up to take my food to the counter (after waiting over an hour for it but I was patient) and the waitress saw me and asked if everything is ok. I told her the chicken was hard and I could not eat it and if they could switch it out for a lasagna. I could sense the attitude because she said “well what did you order” I told her chicken parmigiana and she said “well that’s chicken” I said - oh ok, it’s hard and I can’t eat it. She gave it to the kitchen and the lady who rung up my order screamed across the restaurant telling me she is taking off everything and if I wanted the lasagna to stay or to go. I said “on the plate”, she asked again- for here or to go? I said again - on the plate. She said the plate is gone. I said there were nothing wrong with my noodles (which were flavorless and sauce was watered down but I did not complain about it), all I wanted was just to sub the hard “chicken” for lasagna. So I said for here… because what would make her think I was no longer hungry and wanting to eat there after I just waited so long for the first plate? Clearly I was still patient enough to order a new dish and wait for it. Which took about 30 minutes. I ended up getting full from the bread and salad and having them pack the food up to go. I must say the tiramisu was good, but a small piece. That’s another reason I gave a double star. Besides that, service wasn’t too good for me (can’t speak for others, but not for me). The food was disappointing and I did not like the lasagna. Did not have much cheese inside the layers and it wasn’t worth the price. Usually I’ll go inside of a Italian place and get huge portions for great price, and great taste. But this was a really disappointing solo outing and first time eating here.

I generally do not like to leave a bad review because I know that on any given day, something out of the ordinary can happen and make for a bad experience at an otherwise good restaurant. That being said, this place did not give my group a good experience when we visited. The Fettuccini Carbonara would have been more appropriately titled "Fettuccini Alfredo with lunch meat. " There was no bacon in sight for this dish.very disappointing. We waited quite a while for entrees to arrive, and the staff didn't seem to be very excited to be there. Altogether, it was certainly not what I had in mind when I saw all of the glowing reviews. I will say I did like the building.just nothing I had that came out of the kitchen.

We decided to try this place last Friday night. I love Family restaurants and usually you will get fabulous food. Sadly this wasn’t fabulous. The restaurant itself looks depressing, and lots of annoying flies.
Our food came out, the garlic bread was like shop bought baguette with some garlic butter spread on top. I had the seafood combo - everything was deep friend including the mussel meat. I do have to say the calamari was good and not cheap and chewy.
The two people I dined with also had seafood dishes and they liked grey and unappetising, they did say they tasted not too bad though.
Presentation of the food wasn’t good, it looked like it had just been thrown on the plate.
Our experience was mediocre.

Went because of the reviews, 10/10 recommend. Gives me comfort home feeling. Love that it’s family owned and the pasta was so good and a very reasonable price!

There clam chowder is fresh. 5 stars. Tasty too
The spaghetti sauce is always on point.
I came back for lunch today. The shrimp is delicious.

Best Italian restaurant in the COUNTY. I love this restaurant. Reasonably priced, family owned, great service and excellent food.

We had a great experience, food was excellent. Small out of the way restaurant has been there many years. Prices are fantastic!
