Had an amazing drive watching burros along the way. Snow scattered everywhere and the I can’t explain the amazing solitude experience

These were amazing to see in person, I was stunned by the scale of them. I had always imagined them to be a fraction of their true size. Was there in February and it was downright frigid. Road was clear all the way up, but 40° cooler than down in Furnace Creek. Be prepared. Have a hard time wrapping my head around the folks that worked these kilns and mines. A hardy bunch indeed.

This is just a quick update on road conditions as of March 3rd, 2023:

That last blanket of snow give the road some good depth. From the Wildrose Camp to the end of pavement, it felt pretty comfy. Once the pavement ended I made it half way to the kilns before finding good spot to turn around. I'm not too comfortable in snow and figured better safe than sorry. Gorgeous views!

Great place for history buffs. Scenery was beautiful. Windy unpaved road, but worth the trip.

The acoustic is AMAZING! Be sure to prepare a song to sing and record. Stand in the middle of the kilns and keep the phone away from you when you record. What an amazing architecture ️. Drive to and back was a bit of a rough road. Make sure you have a 4-wheel drive. Wouldn't recommend sedans either. Road was closed beyond this spot, so we couldn't drive past this location. We were there on Jan 20th. Bit of snow, but it wasn't too bad.

Real snow in Death Valley!
We went there in January first week on a weekday late afternoon while returning back towards Bakersfield. Place is bit far but worth the drive! Also note that signs show 6 miles from wild rose campground, but it is 7.1 miles from there. Park map shows that it is right after pavement ends, but last 2.1 miles is without pavement. Not a bad road, we were in SUV, but sedan would also do fine (except on icy ️ road). Kilns are huge and you won’t miss finding them during your drive. On cold days, there is a likelihood of black ice just before you reach charcoal Kilns, though we did not encounter it (we went there late afternoon on a sunny day). Bit secluded place so recommend going there with group of vehicles (2 or more).
There are two roads to reach there (wild rose campground). One from the park side and another one from west side- Panamint Valley road. Panamint Valley road is straight road without much of a up/down-hill drive and curves. Road from Park side is steep climb and lot of curves towards the end. My recommendation would be to go there while entering the park and use Panamint Valley road.

Always a marvel to observe. It was hard packed ice. We watched Jeeps slide downhill with zero traction. Just go to the top and back into the little parking area. I remember using your brakes can lock up your wheels and turn you into a sled. Slow rolling makes for traction.

This is a must when you visit Death Valley! Get directions before you leave. Kids love it. Too! They used to make charcoal here. Take some food and drink as there's no food there.

Ten beehive-shaped structures, about 25 feet high are very well preserved. Charcoal kilns in Death Valley National Park, located along Emigrant Canyon Road, 28 miles from Highway 190. The last two miles of the road are not paved, but any well maintained car should be able to make it. An 8.4-mile round trip trail to Wildrose Peak begins from the kilns.

Nice little spot to see. But be warned as it takes about 3 miles of unpaved road to get here.

A must go hitorical site in Death Valley. The road had a lot of sharp turns along hillside, avoid going there after dark. One can hike to the top to see the Bedwater Basin from above.

Not a lot of people in this part of the park. A little bit cooler too. The kilns are not a big attracion, but you can start your hike to Telescope Peak from there.
