Kellari Taverna reviews
13We had a wonderful dinner and then had some drinks outside on a beautiful spring evening. Perfect end to our stay in DC.
Food and drinks never disappoint. Great happy hour specials and the sea food and fish dishes are always delicious.
Extremely overpriced, food not worth the money, food isn’t really greek and the food took one hour to come. Also bad service
Not the same Khellari - new management should stick with what worked. Olives, toasted /grilled bread with olive oil and wonderful staff who understood K street…
The menu sounded a lot better than the food. All edible, but nothing to bring you back for more.
I have been to the one in NY. This one is a poor reflection. Ambience is not good. Service is average. Food was ok for this kind of place. Very average over all.
I visited this restaurant based on a recommendation from the Hay Adams hotel, but unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my experience. The food was incredibly salty, to the point where it was almost inedible. It was a waste of both my money and time.
Where do I start? I never like to give a bad review, but I do want to provide a subjective honest review. Let me start by saying Malcolm, our server, did an amazing job considering the situation he was given by the owner or manager. We called to make reservations for brunch today but was told it would not be necessary and just show up, which we did at 1PM. When we arrived, there were maybe 16 tables occupied and maybe that many empty, but we were told it would be a 15-30 minute wait. I asked why because there were obviously many empty tables, and we were told no reservations were needed. Malcolm told us he was the only server working today. He seated us, and we felt really bad for the server but waited patiently. Long story short, we were there almost 3 hours. It was three courses and bottomless mimosas. The service was very slow but no fault of Malcolm's.
For the price of this establishment, we had certain expectations like linen napkins instead of paper napkins. You can see by the photos that the food was not too bad and I wouldn't tell people not to go but I was not excited about the meal. The best part was the lamb chops in the lamb sald. I would not recommend the Eggs Benedict. The poached eggs were a little undercooked, and hollandaise sauce was a bit congealed as if it had been sitting for a while and just microwaved. However, the flavor was not all bad, just not what I'd expect for the price.
After our order was taken and we were waiting for our appetizer (35 min), another man, maybe the manager, brought us menus so we could order. I told him we ordered over 30 min minutes ago. I would just suggest getting more servers and work on communication internally. I know there was one party there with a Prime Minister from another country. Not a good look to see so many empty tables with dirty dishes while customers coming in waiting to be seated as well.
My dinner experience was wonderful tonight. I was skeptical after seeing recent reviews, but the food and service were great! First, get the Groupon. It was a great deal. Our server, Nicole, was so attentive and helpful. She answered all my questions about gluten-free options.
Now for the food. I got the grilled calamari, the salmon, and the fruit dessert. My friend got the shrimp linguini and the cheesecake. We would recommend all of it. Everything was so flavorful and cooked perfectly.
I was very impressed and will definitely come back.
I used to come here with group of 10-20 friends for the Greek party. Years ago it was an amazing place with tasty food. But in the past two years the service is bad, food is mediocre and smaller portions, and the only thing that went tremendously up are the prices. After giving them many chances and being disappointed, we wouldn’t be coming back to dine with them, and unfortunately cannot recommend them anymore.
Used a brunch Groupon and it was overall a good experience. I called and asked if the coupon was for unlimited brunch and the person said yes, when I come to the restaurant, it's actually just for unlimited drinks.
I got the soup starter course and it was really yummy! Then an omellete for the main course and a cheesecake for dessert. Food was great.
There was a waiter, maybe in her 40s-50s, with curly dark hair and glasses, that was rude in an aloof way. I would ask questions about our order and she would walk away without answering, then come back with the answer. Like if I asked when we should start the course, she would walk away and ignore me, then have the menus when she was back. Very weird and unusual. I've never experienced such a personality before. Maybe she couldn't hear, whatever, it's rude and it made me and my friends all feel awkward.
Valentine's day nightmare.
A restaurant in complete disarray: it took us half an hour to get a cocktail menu, 1 hour for a drink (that was also not the right one) and 90 minutes to get any food.
A waiter was broadcasting updates to the guests trying to minimize the debacle, a format well suited for a true taverna, not one that charges $100 for a fix meal. The owner complete absent.
Granted in the end they only made us pay for one meal, but that was too late. Suggestion: take care of the guest during the meal, offer a glass of wine, some snacks, etc. By the end of it, one is too upset to appreciate any gesture.
Food was fine when it came.
Excellent spot for solo dinner or date night. It's family friendly as well (if you have one). The food is terrific. It's a neo-blend Mediterranean style. The service is great. My only issue is they didn't have a couple of the wines I wanted.and they didn't have metaxa (i don't know how to call a proper restaurant Greek, if it doesn't serve metaxa). Highly recommend.
