the brig reviews
13It was bar food. I did not like the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It tasted like deconstructed buffalo sauce and I don't like buffalo chicken. The outdoor atmosphere and neighborhood were positives for this place.
This location has a great beer selection (including NA options) and bar food. It has a nice, clean, open, picnicky vibe. I wasn't impressed with the Nashville hot chicken sandwich which, although well-spiced, was an ill-conceived menu creation consisting of two breaded, spiced CHICKEN FINGERS inside a bun covered in coleslaw and pickles. This results in the loosely-assembled sandwich completely falling apart, coleslaw and pickles all over, on the first bite unless you're prepared. Using chicken fingers is a well-known kitchen shortcut to make a sandwich; at a locale like this I would have expected a breaded chicken breast. I lost 3/4 of my sandwich's fillers on to my plate in the first bite, only to be carried away by the attentive busboy. The fries were pretty decent, the first batch were well-prepared. The Old Bay fries were well spiced, but could have used a bottle of malt vinegar on the side. Many of the fries in the second batch were crispy husks, likely culled from the bottom of the fryer basket. That being said the service was very good and we were served all our drinks and food very quickly. I would say this is a great place to come have a drink and maybe get a basket of fries.
To add to the review, my wife thought the wings were great, and again we had excellent (speedy) service. My final opinion is that this is primarily a beer garden and does well with that, but the food is almost an afterthought. With just a little more attention to the food, this place could be in 4-5 star territory.
I’ve been to the Brig a few times and while I don’t recommend the coleslaw, I’ve enjoyed much of what I’ve ordered, especially the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. They also have a great non-alcoholic bar menu which includes a rarity - a non-alcoholic IPA! It’s def a good place to join a group of friends for drinks.
Spacious, fun cocktails, dog friendly - good place to hang. Food is just ok, but you don't really come here for that anyway.
Be prepared to use the QR code, it would've been helpful to have the QR code on each side of the table or on a plastic menu holder so we could pass along to the people at our table and didn't hear music playing but would've been nice for more music than just everyone talking.
Lackluster service from staff, who appear apathetic/burnt out. The Brig also categorically refuses to manually process card payments, and instead directs customers to a proprietary platform that harvests user data and charges patrons a fee for placing an order.
Awesome outdoor spot. Good drink selection and good bar food. Close enough to Navy Yard to be accessible but far enough away to avoid all the Navy yard crowds. All around good outdoor drinking hole.
Fun outdoor beer garden atmosphere. Good place when you want a chill vibe. Lots of space and lots of choices for drinks.
Great little beer garden in the Navy Yard area of DC. Monday to Thursday, there is a happy hour. Most beers are then 7 dollars. This bar definitely feels like a mix of a DC bar and a German beer garden.
Nonchalant and indifferent service that’s not really worthy of the kind of great tip I routinely offer elsewhere. No one acknowledged our existence. Beer was dropped without a word other than a description of the brand of beer. You can get up and get your own water too. There seems to be a service-included pricing model here? It’s really difficult to tell that one way or another.
We had a good time at The Brig. We expected a bit more traditional German foods. We did enjoy the visit. You have to order from an app / website but that could be changing.
Went here for a work happy hour. The ordering system must be broken, because the waiter kept giving us the wrong order. Ended up with two free beers, but the wrong ones. There's nothing like expecting an IPA and getting a Hefeweizen
