HBCU along George Avenue NW is one of D. C. 's off-the-beaten-path museums. It's small, but might. Here's my experience going on a Wednesday afternoon in December 2021:

1) Ticket: No need to reserve them. I walked in and paid $8 for a self-guided tour. An extra $2 gets you a tour guide.

2) Exhibits: The story of HBCU institutions and their alumni are told through photographs and mementos. Each wall has a yellow poster that goes into detail about each exhibit, including fun facts. It's very informative. The back room is small, but includes a restroom where the exhibit continues. Take the time to read everything. It took me 30-45 minutes to soak it all in.

3) Store: In the front is a small gift shop with swag and goods made by local makers.

If you're hungry, walk down Georgia Avenue NW to Moh Moh Licious for dumplings.

It has a lot of great facts but way too small. Also there is no ramp and there are stairs so not accessible. The tour guide was nice but really small. Not worth the price of admission if you don’t use Groupon. If you use Groupon then you get a good discount. Would love to see it expanded and more exhibits. Needs to work on that ADA compliance.

It is a small space but it has a lot of information that you may not find out anywhere else.

I really wish I could give a positive review, but it was a little misleading. I was expecting more than a 2-room "tour", and certainly didn't need a guide (even though Tiffany was delightful).
What's more disappointing is I ordered a tshirt because the one I wanted wasn't onsite. I've been waiting almost two months for the shirt to arrive in the mail, even after speaking with the owner on 8/24, who assured me I would receive it. I even traveled from NJ to DC today, because the website said they were open until 8pm, yet they were closed when I came by at 6pm. No answers on either phone, so I'm disappointed with the lack of customer service but I'm hopeful that it'll get better and I'll receive the merchandise I paid for!

I saw this museum on Groupon the other day and since I graduated from Morgan State University (an HBCU) I decided to check it out. Unfortunately when I arrived yesterday at 3: 10PM, the door was locked and nobody came to the door even though their posted business hours say open Sundays from 1-6PM. I tried calling, but nobody answered. Their answering machine even said they were open Sundays from 1-6PM. I posted a photo of the time I called them as well as their hours for Sunday. I would love to see what it is like inside. I will try again another day. I want to see this flourish and grow. I hope the company will take this review and make appropriate adjustments. I have told all of my HBCU friends about this and i want them to be able to see it. The hours need to be adjusted if they are not open on Sundays.

The HBCU Museum experience is refreshing. The curator demonstrated thorough knowledge along with the ability to engage us as visitors. She took us on a journey of exploration and connection. There is a lot to be excited about in terms of the history and information available to the public inside this storefront on Georgia Avenue. The HBCU Museum is perfect for families, small groups, and definitely a field trip. Gathering here would be an awesome opportunity for youth who may be in search of historical accounts of great things and American Black people's capacity to continue to create, evolve and sustain oneself. Not only can youth gain knowledge and come face to face with remarkable endeavors but Adults also. The admission into the museum is priced budget friendly. Parking on the street is available. However, the meter maid was ever present on this street. Pay that meter. I did notice the Metro/Public Transportation stops throughout this area. It has come to my knowledge that The HBCU museum will be expanding, so keep an eye out. They could be coming to a community near you.

This is clearly a startup venture. As such, one should expect that everything is not all together yet. It is a great idea and it needs community support. As a HBCU alum, I hope that Black people will get behind this effort and make it work. If we don't support each other, we shouldn't expect others to support us.
