We rented 5 O’clock Somewhere, at 22878 Privateer, Cudjoe Key for July. Before we arrived we had a phone message that they “couldn’t get the front door lock to work” so we should use the back slider, which they said would be unlocked. Yes, it was unlocked, because it was incapable of being locked, the handle had been improperly installed so it couldn’t latch. The house was quite warm, but the AC was running. The first few days were busy, as I fixed the latch on the rear door, changed the battery in the front lock, and notified them that there was a water leak. On the third day a plumber came, asking my help with turning water on and off, running faucets throughout the house, etc. The house still seemed warm, but maybe it was something I could manage? Nope. After more than a week of closed blinds, not cooking indoors, keeping the thermostat set low and still suffering I called Action Keys Realty to complain that the air conditioning was not working properly. 80’ inside, only finally cooling down past midnight for a few hours. Their response was that the ac unit was too small to keep the house cool in the summer. They suggested that they had a window unit new in the box that they could drop off and I could try to install it! When I objected to being asked to do their maintenance, she said she was “Just the rental agent” and that there was nothing else she could offer.
The stairs are creaky, the tub stopper doesn’t work, the towel rack was barely attached. The bunk beds have no ladder or safety rail. They say I will have to pay the water bill and the excessive electric bill from the air conditioner running 24/7 and it’s still hot!

Where do I start with the rental (Isle be Back, 928 Gulf Drive, Summerland Key FL) : the beds, the chairs, the ice machine, the deck/dock, the bikes, the kayaks? For the positives the kayaks were the only things that worked and the house was nicely decorated. Nothing else listed worked or was worth the $9000 rental fee, plus we had the pleasure of paying $600 for using the electric and taking showers.
Okay, how about some details? First, the beds are completely untenable. You can literally feel the bed springs poking in your back, and do not expect any support. I would estimate the beds to be over 20 years old; the 4” mattress pads that we bought did help. Sorry we took them home with us.
Most of the deck chairs were also in severe disrepair. The bottoms of the metal ones were rusted through and the lovely wooden rocker had a rotten back.l did fall through one of the metal ones and flipped over backwards in the rocker when the back broke. Similarly the decks/docks were rotting with screws sticking out, someone will falling through soon. Oh I forgot the handrail broke off as I was walking up the stairs one night.
The ice machine was broke when we arrived and obviously had not worked for quite sometime. The realtors/owners were good enough to fix it 3 days before we left. With fishing and adult beverages we spent about $300 extra for ice. And let’s not forget the bicycles, they clearly haven’t been ridden over a block for years. The tires are flat the chains and adjusters are rusted, on a positive note they make some really strange noise when trying to peddle.
Bottom line, Action Key Reality truly did not know and/or care about the quality of their rental. Why wasn’t Action Key aware of or disclose any of these serious issues? If someone is injured do to this negligence, is Action liable? As for “Isle be Back” not even if it were free.

I'm very happy with their service. Locally owned and operated. The owner Cheryl called me directly when there was a problem and she rectified it immediately. Would recommend.

Cheryl and her team at Action Keys have done a great job handling our rental property over the last 10 years or so. They secure good bookings with consistent repeats and any issues that may come up with the property are always resolved quickly and professionally. They have been very nice to work with over the years.

It took me this long to write this review because I’m still in awe of the lack of responsibly on both Action Keys and the home owner of the house we stayed in. My husband is military and we were waiting for our long term rental house (not with Action Keys) to be available to move into. So for the month of May 2017, we decided to take a chance (after hearing other military members complaints) and rent a vacation home for a month. Let me tell you, it was a month from hell. First off, they leave all the lights and ACs running on full blast before you get there. That seems fine and nice at first glance, until I’ve now seen them do this to other homes next door to ours that use them to manage rentals and they will have the lights on in these homes FOR DAYS prior to the people renting it get there. Running up the electric bills for them. Now.onto the “good” stuff. When we got there, as stated, all of the lights were on in EVERY room/bathroom and ACs running but the main one didn’t work at all. So we let them know and we were told to continue to let it run to “pull all the hot air out. ” Then, the washer didn’t work at all so we had to make multiple trips and spend quite a bit of money on doing our laundry in Marathon before the laundry in Big Pine opened. Once someone came to put a new one in weeks later, they weren’t able to install it.why? Because there was a leak from the shower with a bunch of water and black mold hanging out behind the washer in the wall. The wall behind the washer was like a sponge there was so much mold hanging out in there.which explained why my husband and our family that moved us down were having such a terrible time breathing. It wasnt until the last few days (of a whole month) that we were there that a new ac unit was put in and that the washer finally got installed. We couldn’t even enjoy our time before my husband left or with our family because people were CONSTANTLY in and out of this house multiple times a week. I couldn’t do anything because I was having to wait around for them. Also, everything was dirty. There were blood/dirt smears on walls, sand on the couches, and dead bugs in the beds. It’s like nobody bothered to clean after the previous people renting. We were told that we would be compensated and never were. Nothing. And we also got the run around about our security deposit check saying it was sent out and come to find out it never was. Lastly, when we did call to let them know about everything going on or to get updates, we were treated very poorly and like we didn’t matter. The biggest head ache I’ve ever been through. I will continue to let others in the military community know to go elsewhere.
