I went to see Amy in regards to some anxiety difficulties and disordered eating. Right from the beginning, she discounted my experiences and emotions. In the four sessions, she didn't give any applicable advice to my situation. She left me only with a factsheet about cognitive distortions. She was dismissive of my eating disorder and stated that it wasn't real despite my years of past struggles with it. Also, when I was explaining an anxiety spiral to her, she told me I was "exhausting to listen to. " However, the worst thing she did was loudly type to her friends on her Mac computer DURING our sessions with her text notifications going off for half of that session. Overall, I do not suggest using her services as she only brought more stress into my life.

UPDATED: I can’t say anything with regards to Dr Boyers as a clinician. We didn’t really interact beyond several texts, one after hours even. Imagine my surprise to find a healthcare professional that takes the time to reach out via text at 9pm just as I’m getting my children to bed. Sadly I missed those and was able to catch up during my “me time”.

Dr Boyer’s is the first name that pops up when you Google “ARFID psychologist Miami”. Her website is quite impressive and even includes a quiz for parents of children who suspect their child may suffer from ARFID. If you don’t pass the quiz click the “contact us for help” button just like I did. Just a quick heads up, she only works with ages 14+. You won’t find that on her ARFID page though. So don’t click the “contact us” button unless you or your child is 14+. You’re welcome.

3 stars because at least she did respond even though it was via text and it was after hours but whatever. Upon my request, she was kind enough to take a second from her day and search up a name and number of an alternate practitioner that I could reach out to who works with younger children. That’s always helpful. I still don’t think her ARFID page is clear with regards to the ages she works with. A couple of tweaks and the lines of communication would be so much clearer.

In the short time speaking with Boyers, it was abundantly clear she had only one thing on her mind: money. Any mention of my problems felt secondary to the method of payment and she was really trying to charge $235 for a FaceTime call in this climate (a pandemic). I canceled the appointment the day of, after I’d finally decided I had to take my needs elsewhere and she called to shame me and to make sure I knew that I was costing her money by doing it so last second. I expected much more empathy and compassion from a person working as a literal therapist. What does one do when you need a therapist to figure out how to cope with the brief words of another therapist? I suppose I’ll have to consider it a bullet narrowly dodged.
