The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest, large galaxy to the Milky Way Galaxy and is one of the most recognizable features pictured in the universe. “Closest” is a relative term, as Andromeda is about 2.5 million light-years away. Although Andromeda is 1.5 times bigger than the Milky Way, it is visible to the naked eye only in a moderately dark sky, usually only available these days in small towns and isolated areas, away from sources of light pollution.

Andromeda appears quite small as only the center part is bright enough to be seen. If the entire Galaxy were visible it would appear roughly the same size as a full moon. In the next 3 billion years, the amount of Andromeda visible to the plain eye will grow as it hurtles toward the Milky Way at about 186,000 miles per second. When these two colossal star groups collide and form a new gigantic elliptical galaxy, it will be a testament to the will of nature that extends far from our own earth and a huge reminder that the universe is forever changing.

Andromeda represents an easily recognized object that challenges us to learn more about it by pushing the limits of our current technology and our understanding of the universe. Andromeda challenges us to think in terms much larger than we are used to, outside the norm or, to paraphrase a cliché, to “think outside the box. ”

Andromeda signifies how change is inevitable and that change can sometimes have an enormous impact on our small, comfortable world. Andromeda evokes a vision of future exploration and the expansion of technology, compelling us to provide solutions beyond the norm.
