Left the same review on the state park page: LOVED camping here. Stayed at primitive site #2. We will be back to try campsite #1. Primitive campers are required to park at the end of the RV camping section at the playground, then hike around 2 miles to campsite. The hike is a beautiful beachy hike thats sandy with little coverage so wear the right shoes to carry all your gear out and have water handy. Plenty of room for multiple tents. There were two fire pits and two picnic tables located at site #2. Bugs were pretty bad but only from about 4pm to 8pm. Absolutely beautiful experience with front row view of the ocean. Park staff was super friendly and helpful. Signs say no pets permitted on beach but we did see lots of RV campers walking out on the trails in the early morning with dogs (must be on leash). Star gazing was stunning, comparable to dry tortugas. Highly recommend giving this a try for primitive campers (bring bug protection).

Amazing campground stay if you like to fish. I recommend planning on staying during the winter months where the bugs might be less overwhelming. Hike in during the early hours to beat the heat if you are backpacking. I recommend taking a cart to tow your gear the 2 miles will feel like 5 in the heat. Your tent mesh will not stop the no see ems or mosquitoes take a Thermacell mosquito repellent or a bug suit.

Starting at 4: 00 PM trout started jumping nonstop mocking me as I used a chicken rig and shrimp. If you are going to fish for trout use a weighted bobber, jig-head and Gulp lure or consult the bait store; with the right rig you will limit out.

I didn't get much sleep because the fish were actually too loud in the water

Initially the Park rangers at the entrance were a little confusing with their directions to the Primitive campsites. We followed their instructions and ended up walking around 3 miles to a restricted part of the park (where reposition rattlesnakes that they find on the park). Luckily we ran into some other rangers on the park later in the day and they were extremely kind and relocated us to the correct site. Once there, the sites were quaint, scenic, and reclusive. A great spot for privacy and connection with nature. The 2.5 mile hike is tough because of sandy trail, and can be intense with summer heat, but there are benches with distance markers every. 5 miles. My advice: bring what you can only carry on your back if youre hiking/bring a wheelbarrel to carry belongings, bring a bike to make your trips to and from the site *the trail is mainly flat" and make sure you are in the Sugar Hill Camp grounds to start your trip to the Primitive site (No one told us that the site started from these camp grounds). Enjoy!

Primitive site #1 doesn't really have any tree cover. Mosquitos Flies & Gnats are relentless. Tarp for shade and bug netting are required. This is a popular fishing spot and not as secluded as anticipated. Superb stargazing location

This is a scenic forest walk to a scenic bay viewpoint. Start point is the playground at the end of the paved State Park Campground loop. Because it is a loose sand trail, the distance travelled will feel longer and more taxing than the 2.5 mile (one way) distance suggests. Much of the trail is inland so often there is limited breeze or still air - so we prefer walking it only on cool days and mornings. There is active eagle's nest to look for most winters, located just before the end of the forest towards the end. On very low tides (and only then) it is possible to also walk the shore north then east on to the second primitive campsite - where another sand trail will connect with the route back.

Bike ride or hike there can be wet with deep puddles after a good rain on the trail. Two benches and a picnic table and fire pit with grate. About 3 miles from campground. Nice view from the point.
