Hunters Lake Boat Ramp reviews
6 This is a rarely used boat ramp on a little fished lake called Hunters Lake. I have been here many times on my bike rides. It has a huge parking lot that is well maintained. The channel that goes to the lake is completely dry so no boating till next July or August after the summer rains.
When I was there recently an angler who had his boat in salt water pulled in and put his boat in to start the engine to flush out the salt water. Oops. He had a heck of a time getting it back out as he went off the edge of the ramp. He had a diesel truck with big tires and 4wheel drive. He finally jacked up the boat frame and got it out. See photos.
So to start the lake itself is great and full of life, but there is a BIG issue. The water in the lake has receded so badly that even a kayaker such as myself can barely get through the canals that are much less than a foot deep. I'd say the most shallow part being right around the bend of the boat ramp, as seen in my picture. It really is a struggle being only as deep as 6 - 10 inches. You can't paddle and have to push your kayak through or use your ores to thrust off the ground. Another problem is that the vegetation is taller than the depth of the lake due to a lack of water. Can this lake receive some love from the county? Maybe a dredging would help significantly.and some rain?
Will give it 5 stars when it's actually able to be used. City council needs to dredge the canal it's one of the few fishable lakes with a boat in Hernando County
Here's my landlubber take on this ramp.
This is a concrete ramp with a cleared channel out to the Lake. I saw a couple small boats launch while I was there - December '22. There's plentiful parking here.
There's a picnic table near the parking lot and a trail leading west away from the parking lot. I wouldn't call this a hiking trail per se but you can meander near the lake, spot some wildlife, fish (?), and walk through a smallish wooded area. Good spot to have a picnic lunch, walk a dog or enjoy nature in an otherwise busy area. There were very few people using the park when we visited on a weekday.
Leashed dogs welcome
Sign for restrooms but I did not find public restrooms
Never crowded easy to launch boats must check to see if water is high enough first
