This is my second review. And here's why: Nelson Construction did an amazing job on renovating our family's home in Dunedin, Florida. It needed significant repair. I was on a fixed budget and we developed a game plan with clear expectations. A week or so ago, a major hurricane hit the neighborhood. It was all over the news. People were out of their homes and everything has been destroyed-on our very street. Thanks to the work done by Nelson, including the repairs on the walls, the quality construction, windows, framing, and roof work, our home is in 100% excellent condition and was not destroyed. There was not a drop of water in the house and that's not the case for our neighbors. It's just incredible to see the results of this work in this very difficult situation. I'd trust Nelson EVERY single time given what just happened. We truly appreciate the staff, especially Jesus. Let me tell you: Jesus is the most responsive, helpful, and responsible worker. He communicates with ease, is helpful even after the project concludes, and has the upmost integrity. Jesus was so thorough and every piece mattered when the hurricane hit-from landscape to roofing to the implementation of the design. I trust Jesus and the entire team at Nelson. Thank you for saving our family's home and for the work you've done for us. We appreciate the ownership and leadership team at Nelson. Thanks!

We reached out to Nelson Construction and Renovations, Inc.to inquire about a new construction project. Unfortunately, we were not in their service area, but Chris, the office manager, was incredibly helpful in answering all of our questions. He even provided us with tips on how to find a reputable builder in our area. He went out of his way to help us and answer our questions about how the typical building process works even though he knew they would not be building our home for us. He even offered to provide guidance should any questions arise in the future. We were incredibly impressed with his professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond. We are so bummed we are not in their service area. This would have been a great company to work with.

7-20-23 UPDATE: It took Nelson around two years to respond but better late than never. Their response is totally FALSE. Read my lengthy review below. Their designer was given budgetary parameters which in the end we found they never followed. What they designed could never be created due to their lack of INTEGRATION with their construction group. Had they consulted with them the designer would have hopefully developed a workable and affordable design. **And NO MONEY was ever refunded for their unusable wasted effort**. Plus the design created was amateurish and gaudy. We contracted with ANOTHER FIRM and got classy design, quality products, and impeccable installation at the budget we originally gave to Nelson's design group who just couldn't get it right.

4-14-21, ONE STAR REVIEW. We are sadly disappointed in Nelson Construction and more so the design team and especially DOMINIQUE NELSON who heads that team. Apparently, at no point - while designs were being done and not until the pre-contract sit-down meeting phase - did she CONSULT someone with CONSTRUCTION expertise at Nelson to guide her in design-to-budget recommendations.

Had she done so periodically, while designing our reno, she would have seen that she was far exceeding our preordained ALL-IN BUDGET of $150,000. And could have - at that point or before she kept designing (at a cost of $5,000 to us) - given us OPTIONS. Whether to increase the budget or decrease the design options and therefore the cost. Unfortunately, we NEVER received any options to make any decisions to go up or down in our budget. After the design phase, at our pre-contract sit-down meeting is when we were HIT with a $255,000 estimated price tag!

In addition to the whopping pricetag, some of the design recommendations by Dominique were ill conceived. EXAMPLE: She wanted to break through an exterior wall to eliminate a huge block window which I told her would be costly in delays: permits from City and HOA, expense, building integrity, etc. She later - only in this ONE INSTANCE - checked with a staff pro in construction. She came back agreeing with my assessment (and I know next to nothing about construction). So much waste of time, energy, and design fees could have been avoided had she consulted with her construction staff on this and other issues BEFORE DESIGNING!

Another design flaw was her obvious LACK of DESIGN TRAINING, which her husband Greg attested to (I should've listened to him and gone elsewhere for design). EXAMPLE: After interviewing me on the guest bathroom reno, I had mentioned that I'd like a subway-tile look in the shower stall and a SLIGHT carryover ACCENT of it in a sink backsplash. However, her design showed a "wallpapered" look of tile on every wall, in every ounce of space. She went from my suggested HINT of tile to SMOTHERING the bathroom with it. It was ludicrous. Oh, and there was the ELIMINATION of the bathroom linen closet too!

One last thing. Please indulge me because this is important. Before we got well under way, only a week into the project, she tells me the initial design is costing me $1,000. I was somewhat shocked since we were just at the starting gate. Politely, I mentioned my surprise at the cost. She proceeded to EXCORIATE me in a lengthy text basically saying that I can't afford her and should consider going elsewhere. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot - blowing off your client at the outset. Instead, good PR would've been to call and discuss this over the phone, not in a NASTY "drop-dead" text.

So, bottom line - go somewhere else for design or do what one of their clients did and get some home improvement magazines and start cutting out pictures of what you'd like Nelson to do. Otherwise, if you use Dominique, hold on to your pocketbook! And make sure you continuously ask are we on budget? If not, you're in for a big surprise.

I had the pleasure of working with Nelson Construction's in house designer, Yokasta. She was absolutely amazing. She was able to take what I needed and create the perfect space for our growing family (think large addition to home, multiple beds and baths) she worked tirelessly to meet my ideal square footage while keeping an eye on overall costs and maintaining amazing anesthetics. We had a few overhauls and I asked for multiple tweaks during the final design process and she was incredibly diligent and polite in meeting my every request. I am so thrilled with the final design that Yokasta Gonzalez produced. She is a true create genius and I feel so fortunate to be working with her firm.

Having the grout work on the floors corrected from Nelson’s sloppy job and found $24,000 worth of “custom cabinet” are not so “custom”. Notice the attached pictures. The bottom boards are not even a part of the cabinets - just shoved underneath. The wood is not even the correct width to fit. This isn’t noticed unless a person is looking, which we didn’t think we needed to get on our hands and knees to inspect. Upon further inspection, the cabinet over the refrigerator does not have the correct frame work to support, it is saggy slightly and the cabinets framing the stove are not even not even, i.e, the stove hides that the cabinet is not the same dimension as the others, it’s shorter. BUYER BEWARE!

Of importance: we moved into our renovated condominium November 8,2021. After 4 months of using our master shower an average of twice a day, by end of February/ early March there was a distinct stench in the shower. At first we thought it was the drain, but then noticed there was standing water and a discoloration of the grout surrounding the natural stone. We tried to dry the shower floor using towels and a fan for over the course of five days to no avail, it seemed water kept seeping to the surface somehow. We had two different companies check the shower floor and were told the same by both-the natural stone floor was not installed properly, there were multiple cracks in the grout and unevenness that caused water to seep through the stone and grout where it could no longer drain away. Also water was seeping through the top of the shower bench to the extent mold was established to alarming extent. The floor and shower bench had to be completely removed and replaced. Further inspection found multiple pin holes in the shower wall grout which had to be patched and resealed.

In response. Never once did we respond we were satisfied and happy with the sub standard tile work. Quite the opposite. There was crooked tile work in the kitchen that had to be repaired as well. In regard to “courage”, we were standing around the dining room table during the last discussion with Greg Nelson where he told us he was done with us and absolutely would not bring any of his crew in to fix the issues. The idea that Nelson Construction “managed” our condo does not credit a response. As far as warranty work, we walked into a “supposedly finished job” to a noticeable dent in the front of the microwave and scratches on the glass cooktop, shelves missing from the refrigerator and the dishwasher incomplete, paint all over the tile floors, no cold water in the master shower, leaking faucet in the guest shower to name a few. In short the “punch list was very long.

Nelson Construction was engaged in Dec 2019 to renovate our 1636 Sq. Ft. Condominium to be completed April1,2020. The job was not completed until late March of 2021. Greg Nelson stood in our living room belligerent, arrogant and condescending, waving his arms in the air pointing towards the family bath shouting that he was not bringing his crew back in to fix the very crooked grout me badlines on the wall tile so I could “sit on the toilet and see straight lines, I was too picky”, and even though he admitted it was “me bad” for not letting us know that there could be an issue with chips in the tile cutouts, he was not bringing a crew in to redo something that could possibly happen again.
