Umu Japanese&Thai reviews
15The vibes are immaculate. This is a fantastic restaurant all the way around. No TVs, no loud music, staff is polite and professional. Everything you want in a sushi spot.
Thought it would be a good time to add an updated review.
1. Ambience setup has been refreshed. Decor has become more neutral. Music tunes have balanced between Jazz and R&B. Not bad food music but it becomes quite confusing, based on the atmosphere layout and the type of cuisine.
Drink
2. I have always ordered Hot Sake here. This occasion and the last two (I'd hoped we're isolated events), it completely lacked any flavor. Tasted like water with drizzles of vodka/gin. Lacked the smooth, flavor with gentle burn that I'd grown accustomed to over the years.
Food
Appetizer - Kara Age Chicken was good but a bit salty.
Main - Menu favorites like the Volcano roll are now gone. Otherwise, ordered 3 sushi roll plates (incl 2 tempura) which were good, but not exciting. There was a measure of sophistication and flavor that's missing.
Overall - Much has changed since COVID. Perhaps Umu appears to be trying to get its groove back, but for what used to be a packed location, the experience now has been very underwhelming.
What it needs now is some new Asian infusion/creativity, attention to quality and a refined identity /direction based on its roots.
For what it's worth, service was still excellent
We saw this on Instagram and definitely had to try it since we are sushi lover! The location of this restaurant is a bit tight parking, but it’s such a nice place for a romantic dinner or date night. We usually sit at a table, but wanted to try out at the sushi bar instead. Our waitress was super nice and welcoming. Chef Dew was welcoming and take his time on making the best sushi. The sushi tasted very fresh and not fishy, except the regular salmon. However, he made a special Wagyu sushi that is out of this world with some truffles on top! To die for! High recommended.
Can’t believe I haven’t posted a review on one of my favorite restaurants in Tampa until now! This is hands down the best Thai/sushi restaurant in the greater Tampa Bay Area.
The owners are of Thai background, but they are so passionate about food. Everything that we’ve tasted on the menu so far is so delicious and well prepared.
They serve only the best fish at such a great price. We often come here primarily for the sushi/nigiri, and you definitely get good value for the cost you pay. It’s fairly priced considering the quality. We haven’t tried their omakase yet, which I am excited about.
My favorite Thai dish on the menu is the eggplant dish! It’s hard to describe, but it is such a good balance of crunch, sour, and umami flavors.
Whenever we have guests from out of town, this is one of the stops we bring them to! 10/10 would recommend!
Really good food. Great atmosphere. Great service. Bit more pricey than the usual casual sushi spot but it is of higher quality. Overall great.
Their specialty sushi rolls are truly works of art! Each bite seems better than the last. I couldn’t decide which I liked best because every thing I tried was top notch! I’m gluten free and they have labeled dishes as well as GF soya sauce you can ask for.
Both the sushi and Thai food is delicious, I highly recommend both. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere but if you’re not into that, they are great with orders to go.
Food was excellent! Service was really good. Not too busy (and we went during dinner time). We got the twin dragon roll and texas roll. Both were delicious. Texas roll is SPICY! I also ordered unagi. A bit on the small scale bit still very good. Everything came out fast and tasted fresh. We will definitely be back.
Ordered takeout and was given the wrong items of which tasted and smelled like it came out of a toxic waste dump. Stay far away from this place. Just awful!
Hidden gem! Best Sushi place in Wesley Chapel! The food was delicious and everything is fresh and had great experience.
I highly recommend this place for family dinner or dinner date.
My family and I LOVE Umu. The food is always delicious, whether from the kitchen or sushi bar. The staff is amazing and the chefs are eager to share new dishes with patrons. Thanks for being awesome!
While I plan to try this restaurant again, this is an honest review of my first experience. The house salad was superb and my husband’s Pad Thai good, however the $30 “New York strip” was *not*. My husband and I questioned whether this was actually a strip steak, but the staff assured us it was. Nonetheless, I have never had a NY strip with this texture before. It was too tough to eat and nothing but gristle (cooked medium temperature).
The majority of it was still on my plate when the server cleared the dishes so I showed them how the steak looked and explained how bad it tasted. They apologized and took $6 off.
I could not recommend this particular entree at any price point, but definitely don’t think I’m out of line for expecting a $30 entree to be tender and tasty.
Arrived about 5 minutes after opening on a Thursday and half the tables were occupied. A small restaurant but very comfortable environment. Terrific server. Food was really good. Especially enjoyed the pork goyza. Also ordered a couple of rolls — the Mexican and chicken katsu. Both good. Really liked the Thai vegetable fried rice and chicken pad-Thai. Only comment is husband found Thai tea too sweet. I particularly liked the iced green tea which the server provided the most delicious honey to sweeten. Will return on next visit to Wesley Chapel.
Outstanding food quality and service. A bit pricier than other places but totally worth it.
We made a reservation for Saturday night and our table was ready when we arrived.
Our server was great - very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the dishes.
We had sushi and tried a couple of the dinners - everything was delicious, fresh, came out in a timely manner, and portion sizes were good.
The only thing to note is that they do not have a bar and only serve beer and wine - and both options are overpriced.
Definitely recommend and we will be back. It's well decorated and a nice environment
