Japanese Grandma's Cafe reviews
19Had the soba noodles with tempura and the shrimp bento box. Everything was fresh and delicious, great flavors. The special drinks for the day were really creative and fun and tasted great. A good place for a fresh and healthier lunch, portions were reasonable.
Yummy yummy food - healthy bento rice bowls with freshly made tempura. Highly recommended home made food!
Zero star if that was an option. Terrible service, bland food, and pricey. This is definitely a tourist trap. Our group of 10 came on a Monday night from the abundance of good reviews, and tried everything on the menu. Nothing was satisfying. The ramen was bland, and the broth tasted like ramen water. The pork chashu was all fat with no flavor (definitely needs more charring and seasoning), and the half egg was a simple soft boiled egg cut into 2 (half an egg is $2.50). The sushi was overpriced for the quality considering the island has many other options for cheaper and better quality fishes. The waitress was rude and unprofessional. There was a miscommunication in ordering. We had ordered a pork chashu ramen and asked if an egg came with the ramen. The waitress brought out a pork katsu instead. She was very aggressive with us and accused of ordering the pork katsu. Who orders a pork katsu with a ramen egg? It was a simple misunderstanding but the way the waitress treated our party due to it was unprofessional. She was aggressive, accusing us of ordering the wrong thing and it was our fault. Bad service and the mistake aside, the food was no where as good as the premium price they charged. I would avoid if possible as it's very much a tourist trap. Bring grandma back into the kitchen bc whoever is the chef needs some help!
So delicious. Nice outdoor seating- relaxing. I had the Kauai shrimp bento bowl w/eel sauce and sesame dressing. SO GOOD. Portions were small/expensive- but the people were so nice.
Aloha, I love this place! The sushi is fantastic. There are other great non sushi items on the menu. I love their hibiscus tea among other creative drinks. The outdoor lani is beautiful with lights, a garden of plants, pretty flowers, and live music. The service is great. You do need a reservation. There is a beautiful shop inside with lovely jewelry, clothes, and other accessories including children's things. I look forward to going here often. I recommend this place. Enjoy.
Service was excellent. Food was even better. Always a must for the rainbow dragon roll and poke tacos. My kids favorite restaurant. Local music feeled the air. Good place for sushi.
So we went on a Saturday because their web site said they had raman on weekends. They don't, told me to call next time. But the what we did have, sushi and tempora was excellent.
Loved this little homey spot! The fish was as fresh as could be, and my pork tonkatsu was juicy and crispy. We had halibut and toro sashimi, the eel roll and a tuna handroll. Recommend
The food was pretty good, but the reason for 3 stars was due to customer service. First, in the hour and 15 minutes we were there, nobody came to clean up the dishes. When someone finally did, the reason behind hind it was trying to get us to leave. The person clearing the dishes, who I assume was a manager made it a point to tell me that the next customers had already checked in for our table. That’s not my problem. You menu says specifically that you have up to 90 minutes. I thought it was rude to try to rush us along. I would not recommend driving an hour to come here like we had to.
I have only given a bad review once in my life, this will be twice. When we arrived there was a very fishy odor. Entree was served cold and our tiger roll was served without the accompanying sauce, horrible roll for $22. We ordered a bottle of sake when we first arrived that never came, but we were charged for it. Our waitress, who I believe was also the manager, never checked in on us after taking our order, while she waited the table next to us. After she overheard us politely asking the bartender about our missing drink she avoided us at all cost and sent a different hostess. Finally got a refund for the sake (that wasn't served), extra sauce (that wasn't served). And got a 20% discount on the horrible tiger roll. Staff was very kind.
Good tasty and flavorful but pricy food. Finally we had some descent Japanese food in Hawai’i. Cheek was a little over done!
So happy we were able to go to this well known place for it's (sushi) menu! We went in for lunch, and came back for dinner!
Waited 40 minutes for our food, and for some reason they forgot our soba. It was taken off from our check though, so one more star for that. The food was ok but pricey. 2 stars. Would not recommend.
Prices all over Kailua are high but Japanese Grandma's Cafe food is worth it. Friendly staff AND delicious food in a cute town.
We did pickup order. Food was great, the adjacent boutique, Blu Umi has also cute stuff that we enjoyed browsing while we waited our food.
It's located 5 min drive from Allen Port so we came here for lunch before going on the Na Pali Sunset cruise. We came on a weekday for lunch and it was a bit difficult to find street parking. The courtyard was nice but it would look a lot nicer if they had put more plants and flowers to decorate it. I agreed with other reviewers that the food is overpriced here. Although the food were good, the portion size was small. I ordered the soba noodles and the portion was quite small even for a petite Asian woman like me (forgot to take pictures of the food). My friends ordered the shrimp bowl and sushi burrito and they were more filling.
Accommodated our party of 12. The seating is in what looks like a little back yard patio with fairy lights. It looks awesome. They have free water but refills on fountain drinks cost. I had the mushroom tacos as an appetizer and they were amazing. The sushi was great as well. They also had live music which was nice. Would definitely go here again!
We tried here once when we first moved here from another island, the food was subpar & it was overhyped. The ramen was bland & the food was overpriced. We wanted to try again to see if it was just that day but every time we try calling to make a reservation or place an order their phone is always busy. We also tried placing an order online which their website gives you that option but it says they’re currently not accepting orders.
Delicious! Fantastically fresh- drinks with freshly squeezed juice, farmers market greens, tempura veggies, Japanese cheesecake. Excellent, friendly service.
