Ken's Fresh Fish, Laie HI

Great spot for fresh fish on this side of the island! They don't have a ton of options, but everything they do have is great. We tried the coconut shrimp and mahi mahi tacos, and seriously, these were the best fish tacos I've ever had in my sweet innocent life! There's no seating inside or out, so you have to pick up and go. The store hours are also limited, and they aren't open everyday, but it is so worth it. Give it a try and thank me later.

Hardly looks like a shop but it is and it's well worth it if your passing and hungry. Ahi was cooked perfect and the sauce flavours don't overwhelm the fish flavours.

Fantastic fish (pictured: monchong) - large potion size for $13. They don’t have a seating area but that’s fine because you should drive to nearby Malaekahana State Recreation area, which has picnic tables by a nearly-deserted beach.

Ken’s is the best food. Coconut shrimp and poke is the best we’ve ever had. Will eat at Ken’s every time we visit!

Every time I go here the food there is above the highest standards. When they say it's fresh it is fresh the quality of food is remarkably the best.

We got the poke (sweet and spicy), the mahi mahi tacos, and the katsu ahi.
The katsu ahi was a huge portion on a nice hamburger bun. I could eat it everyday

Only downside is it's not open for dinner!

They also sell fish by the lbs and poke to go.

My entirely favorite stop. Their smoked marlin is to die for. And they have the world's best coconut shrimp.

Ahi Katsu is a definite must. Got to try the Ono with the garlic butter caper sauce, ho.new broke da mouf status. Even picked up a huge ahi steak for my FIL to make his poke.

First of all maybe we got the wrong thing: Seems like a lot of customers prefer the Katsu ahi and coconut shrimp. Nevertheless the poke we had was not on par with the other poke places across the island (we arrived around 1: 30 pm. Maybe it was too late?) We’ve been to other local places that serve fresh and unfrozen poke. I saw the owner replied that many of these popular local shops on the island serve not fresh but CO2 processed ahi. That’s very interesting and I’d like to see more proof or research on that as it sounds a little tenuous.

Back to the poke - The texture of the fish is a bit too mealy, and it didn’t have the pleasant chew as the other poke that we have had on the island. The fish was also a little mushy and under seasoned. Service was ok.

I don’t mean to maliciously target a local shop, instead supporting local shops has been the main purpose of my trip in Hawaii - to feel the diversity and generosity of the people, ocean and the land. Maybe we just got the poke on a bad day, but I hope I could at least leave a review that’s honest about the food and my experience.

We drove all the way here because of the good reviews. I can’t even call myself a poke connoisseur but the fish quality here is just so bad and it’s super overpriced. A small container for 10. Ahi shoyu is way too salty and the other ahi poke tastes super not fresh and bland. I’m going to be honest and say the fish tastes like tofu… you can only take out which I’m ok with but friends please avoid this place if you want good poke and atmosphere. If you think this is the best poke you have had, at least try fresh catch, Yama’s, Tamashiro and off the hook. Man I’m so disappointed.

We got the Opah regular ($15) with ono fish tacos. Portions turned out to be huge, we could have split either one. Food was awesome. We’re on our way back to buy ourselves a t shirt and apron.

So good! One of the best places on the North shore to get good food. Poke is good, of course, but the ahi katsu is also something I would recommend. The prices are reasonable considering the amount and quality of food you get.

Stopped by on way to gunstock ranch for a quick bite. The food was 100% delicious.
Fresh fish (opah) & coconut shrimp. Sautéed & fried. Great both ways.

I went there on my final day staying in Laie and sad I didn’t try this place sooner as I wouldn’t have eaten at many other places as this would have been my go to for fish staying in Oahu. I had the Katsu Style Fish and the fresh Sashimi. I wanted to save some for others in my group to try, but it was so good I didn’t leave much else for others to try. I would highly recommend Ken’s if you are on the north side of Oahu. Some of the best food you will find on the island.

Local spot for amazing seafood. The ahi katsu and poke were particularly spectacular. No restrooms on site - the closest is either at the shopping center a short drive south or the state park north.

The food gave me intense diarrhea for several days, not sure if cleaning standards are followed properly.
