It takes a while to get here, but the views and the hike are worth the effort. I have never seen lava rock in such quantity before. Takes your breath away. Lots of locals and tourists alike were fishing, snorkeling or just enjoying the views.

Beautiful drive through the lava fields. Added bonus of seeing some goats eating on the side of the road. Bring shoes if you plan on walking the trails.

Kind of a neat spot. We didn't make it all the way to the beach. Definitely don't wear sandals. The area is kind of neat but there's not a lot of cultural explanations.

Our favorite place on Maui. Arrive early for parking, take your time on the drive out, seriously it's an extremely narrow road on top of Lava.

Lavafield and the trail going south to the southern edge of the island if really wonderful. It is a hard hike, with almost exclusively stones to walk on. Do not go at night! In a single trail you'll be able to see many climates and very diverse wildlife. Removed a star for the lack of clear direction/pathways.

Great hike! Wear sturdy shoes! Slippahs are doable, but hard on the angles. Find the pools at the end near the radio tower!

Very beautiful area. The lava is extremely hard to walk on so be careful and watch your step. And be respectful of the history of the ruins.

A little rough getting here, but well worth it. Beautiful place, with cultural and historical interests. If you want to see lava on maui its the place to go see.

Otherworldly views of lava flows and coral beaches with swimming turtles. Only downside is very rough footing on paths. Be sure to bring water and sturdy shoes!

Did this hike with 2 young kids. We only made it 75% of the way to the lighthouse due to the 2 younger kids but they had fun with the tide pools and all the wild goats that were around!

These lava fields were so amazing just miles of this rock piled high on top of each other this field was on the island of Maui just a little south on the coast in Kihei

So cool! We kinda accidentally found this and we weren’t dressed right for the trail so we didn’t go far, but really cool area! Lots of signs for dolphins but I didn’t see any. Road was in rough shape so be careful with a rental.

Lava Fields is a very primeval place and gives a very good idea of what the Hawaiian Islands must have looked like as lava first poured from below the sea There are few plants, it's windy, and the sun beats down relentlessly. However, this is compensated by the beauty of the sea breaking against the exposed rocks. It gives me an appreciation for all the changes these islands have gone through.

The road here is paved, but narrow, with only the last part being bumpy. Make sure to yield when possible. There are two parking areas, both unpaved. If the first is full, proceed makai and there are more places scattered about. Be aware this is a primitive area, with port-a-potties and no water. There is not much of a beach and swimming is extremely dangerous due to the waves and rock. Being so close to Makena and Wailua, it's more than worth the drive, even if just for a brief visit.

Amazing field formed by the old lava flow ending at the ocean. Be Aware! The road to here is rough! Often one lane only requiring you to pull over frequently and let oncoming traffic pass by. The road skirts the ocean and when we passed by at high tide with big swells, the ocean was washing rocks up over the road. There is very little parking where this road dead ends. On a weekend it can be so full you just have to turn around and drive the long road out. Go during the week, or stop about a mile prior to this point where there is a big parking lot - this is the begining of the lava fields (Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve Parking Lot). Also note that this spot marks the end of the road. Literally. You cannot continue any farther than this.

Free to go to, road in a bit of a nightmare with potholes and barely room for one lane.

Very beautiful views. Would recommend, just drive carefully. We were in a car, we made it just fine.

Enjoyed driving through lava fields along the shoreline. It was amazing to see amount of lava and varieties of lava rocks.

Neat place where the lava meets the ocean. Parking is easy. Definitely bring good shoes if you're going to hike here. Lots of jagged rocks.
