Limahuli Garden & Preserve, National Tropical Botanical Garden reviews
19We were pleasantly surprised by Limahuli Gardens. The garden tour is self guided via a hand held booklet that describes the surrounding plants and the history behind them. The path leading through the grounds was immaculate and you can tell they take pride in caring for the land. We brought along our 4 year old who equally enjoyed exploring all the gardens had to offer. It’s best to reserve a spot ahead of time online as parking is limited onsite. We spent about 2 hours total. Highly recommend.
Incredibly informative self guided tour with a beautiful walk along the River and below the mountain peaks with views of the ocean.
Clearly show how the flora of the islands changed from natives which were destroyed by cows and people and replaced by what we know today. Most importantly they are working to restore native trees and plants which is very informative.
This is a must for a change from beaches and surf
Great self-guided your and friendly staff! A little pricey, but all funds go directly to the garden and preservation of nature! Definitely a must-do on Kauai!
Soo glad we came to these botanical gardens. The views the entire time were a pinch me is this real moment. I highly recommend checking this place out.
I would give this place a higher rating, but charging $25 from non-residents and only $10 from locals is blatant discrimination, and this is so wrong to me. I don't feel this place is even worth $25. The setting is nice, don't get me wrong and there were some cool trees, but the main attraction here are the terraces. The lady was saying it would take 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the 3/4 mile trail, we walked it in under an hour. It's also probably a good thing that we got there when we did, because as we were leaving they were asking people if they have a reservation.
Maybe for this price you can skip this place, as I read there are nicer gardens in the south of the island.
The majority of attractions on Kauai are free, but the few that do change are very expensive.
Very well maintained garden with tons of plant species, some endangered and some extinct in the wild / only found on Kauai. Beautiful and peaceful vibes, but bring lots of bug spray.
An absolute highlight of our time in Kauai. Limahuli is an incredibly well curated center that goes beyond just the flora of Hawaii; the guidebook provided for the self-guided tour is packed with incredible information about how all of these plants came to be on the islands and how they were used by the people here. The path is steep at times but manageable, and there are plenty of points where you can stop and rest. An absolute gem on the north shore.
Lovely gardens, good tour booklet and a reasonable price for all the info the provide you. They are also doing conservation programs for rare plants there.
For a gardener, this place is worth a few hours. I would like to return when the trade winds are blowing - i.e, when it's not quite so hot - to learn more about these ancient master growers' techniques.
I was very disappointed at this place. We've been to other botanical gardens at Oahu and I thought this was going to be as beautiful as the others. We didn't see as much flowers as we thought. The map said that there's water for you to drink in different stops, well guess what? There's was none, only the water dispenser that is by the gift store, so take at least two bottles of water, specially if is very hot day. You walk up hill so take a walking stick. The only thing that we loved the most, was the view when we reached at the top at the trail, we saw the beautiful view of the beach.
Beautiful garden with a nice little trail and enormous friendly staff. Thank you very much!
We visited in 2017, and were very impressed with the whole place. One can learn so much from all the information provided by the preserve about how the ancient inhabitants were able to make a good life for themselves with the available resources.

This is a beautiful hike and they have a small gift shop. Ticket comes with book for a guided tour on the trees and plants.
*beautiful views, educational, easy hike, and great staff
Thoughtful & organized.
Pamphlet is probably the best self-guided tour and fun reference document I’ve ever seen.
Highly recommend if you have any interest in plants or local history.
Although it's one of the cheapest botanical gardens on the island, it was still awesome. Beautiful and very informative
For $25 per adult, there is no much to see. However, you can make few nice photos of surrounding mountains.
Beautiful place. Informative booklet included with tour. Parking is scarce so you have to reserve a time slot. Restrooms are clean and staff is friendly
Wonderful gardens to spend an hour or so. Easy walk with steps, inclines and declines. Not stroller, wheelchair, or walker friendly. Make sure to book on line ahead of time. Especially if you plan on driving your rental vehicle there.
Learn about history and native Hawaiian plants in a walk with fantastic views and scenery.
