Makauwahi Cave Reserve reviews
15Super fun find right near Poipu. Loads of trails down to a cave, farm, and a beautiful beach. They also have some rescued tortoises. A good short outdoor activity for the family. To enter the cave you do have to crouch down but it's a very short distance (but those with limited mobility/stopping be warned!). Would definitely come back to lay on the beach and swim!
Great walk down the trail. Went over to see the Turtles and beach. Do bring $10.00 cash for donation.
This was a really neat unexpected find as we explored southern Kauai. Fantastic cliff views, an informative and beautiful hike down to the cave area, a unique cave experience (donations are optional, but the visit is free), a tortoise sanctuary, and a great beach met by a freshwater stream are all worthwhile points of interest in this place.
Amazing views and well worth the hike to get there from Poipu beach. They have numerous signs asking for $10 per person to enter, but I didn't see many people actually pay and I don't ever bring cash on hikes so we didn't pay anything. You must crawl about 5' on your hands and knees to get through the entrance.
You will be rewarded with beautiful views and a little adventure at the end of the short hike. This is another beautiful gem in Kauai.
Very bumpy road along north side of golf course and yes you are on the correct road to get there. A very nice trail to reach cave.
Super cool to go down into the cave and a different type of cave than I'm used to which was awesome!
Interesting easy hike. There was a docent available for a quick informative talk. Well managed.
Very interesting piece of Hawaiian culture.
You must physically crawl (hands and knees) a few feet to get inside.
Quick little pop off and either walk from the parking lot or hike from the heritage trail. Make a partial day of it and go grab a spot at the nearby beach before coming up here to pop around for a few minutes. Yes, you have to crawl through a small opening in a cave. So, if you have certain knee problems or any reason you can’t bend and crawl for 5 ft, this is a no-go.
Beautiful spot. $10 donation request but not expected. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes because we didn’t want to listen to the volunteer explaining all the archaeological finds. She was telling another couple some interesting factoids so we learned a little bit.
Very interesting and unique reserve. Sad to see how rapidly the flora and fauna are getting wiped out by development. Hopefully the Makauwahi reserve will be around for our children to experience
Awesome little cave complex. Enjoyed the quick hike. Also walked over to see the tortoises nearby and the beach. Highly recommend doing this.
Really beautiful cave. There is a tour guide that is very knowledgeable there that excepts donations.
Nice short hike up to the caves, then on to Ezra's Beach from shipwreck Beach. Beautiful views bring lots of water, go for a swim and watch the sunset. Kauai did not disappoint us
The cave is a short walk at the end of a potholed dirt (possibly muddy) road. The entrance doesn't open until very close to 10 AM. It's a very short crawl to enter. The guide for our day was Jerry, an easy guy to talk to. The cave you can get in is not very deep and pretty boring. The deeper caves are sacred and sealed off. The history is very interesting and the story is worth the $10 fee.
