Mākena State Park reviews
19 There's a $10 parking fee and an additional $5 per person (even if you're in the same car). These are for the large designated parking lots. Saw cars pulled over one the sides of the roads before and between the two entrances for the state park. Walk further south to get to the not so secret cove.
Beautiful beach, clean sand and a great view for sunsets.
Expensive to park but I get it. Keeps homeless out of parking lot. Waves are shore breakers. Not a place to play in the water and relax.
My first beach visit on Maui and now one of my absolute favorites.
Please Pick up any glass you see walking any beach here. There are still A holes who break glass and leave it in the sand to find your childs tiny feet. This should never happen. If you are caught with glass on my beach you will be escorted off and more than likely fined. Treat our beaches like you live there it pretty simple. Don't be one of those A holes!
One of the nicest beaches I've ever encountered. I was staying in a condo in Kihei & it was less than 15 minutes drive. The surf breaks near the shore. It's a powerful current. The views of Molikini & the other island gives this place a special feeling.
The sand is strange. It's wonderful to walk on and lay on, but it's sticky. I've never felt such sand. Hard to wash off.
Also known as Big Beach. Strong currents are possible with a shore break but still fun for adults with a thirst for adventure.
Beautiful state park.plenty of beach space for everyone.they do have electronic machines to pay for parking but lots of people just park outside of the lot for access.
Nice warm sandy beach in the shadow of a mini dormant cinder cone volcano and a nice view of the Island of Kahoʻolawe on the horizon. Pretty cool to check out the lava rocks on both the northern and southern ends of the Big Beach. There were some fish beneath the waves, but most of them were near the reefs by the rocks, which you should be careful not to swim too close, don’t want the waves hurting you. Waves were pretty large and choppy in the afternoon, maybe it’s just the day I went. The beach had portable toilets, but not any shower facilities that I saw, but did bring along some tap water to clean off before getting in the car. Also, there is a parking fee.
This is a great beach but because it's a state park there is a vehicle/person fee (we paid $10-$15 for two people plus our car). The beach itself is quite big & nice, the water is inviting with nice waves. There was no running water here so no shower & only a port-a-potty for a restroom. In the future I would probably pass this beach over for others I found just as nice with running water amenities. Give it a try if you don't have any issues paying a fee & no running water.
I'll tell you what he's greedy people running this island charging $10 for Park you know this is a beautiful island bro they like spoil everything cuz they like getting money you know us local people we shouldn't have to pay $10 for part and then they make us walk too putting Gates everywhere and they like to talk about aloha
Gorgeous! Parking was $10 Plus $5 per person! Beautiful and worth it! Free Parking is on Main road!
Beautiful beach, lots of parking and the food truck nearby was very handy. Loved our visit
I was dropped off to take a picture on our last day of vacation since we always end up at the Little beach side and I was curious to know how it looked like and the parking attendant told my family that waited in the car for me that there is an entrance fee. As far as I know, there is a parking fee only, not a freaking entrance fee. She tried to take our money by informing us, but little does she know we didn’t fall for it. She needs to work on her Aloha spirit. We left shortly after. As nice as this beach is, it’s not worth a visit while there is a money hungry worker on the prowl. And if we park outside of the gates, will we be denied entry here?
Beach is nice, lots of room, fairly short trek from the parking lot. Only issue is the water. About 20' out water depth is at your thigh. 5' more, and it's over your head. Waves crash right on the beach.
Beautiful beach park, not too busy during the week, nice sand and no big rocks in the water! Only down side is no wash station to wash the sand off after the beach! Parking is a $10 flat rate
Beautiful beaches but the waves are rough and there is no where to rinse off sand before getting in the car.
Beautiful beach but it is out of the way and there are no facilities or anywhere to rinse sand off. There are many other beaches with free parking and rinse stations.
Paid parking available that leads onto the beach. Plenty of space along the long beach to settle in and have a great view of the sunset. The surf was a little too strong for me to feel comfortable swimming but I saw plenty of people/ groups having fun in the water - either way, the view and sound of the waves was fun to enjoy
Beach is gorgeous. Super windy in the afternoon.
The signage for parking wasn’t super clear but once you use the machine it’s simple. $5/person.
No lifeguard when we were there around 3pm.
Not too crowded and plenty of parking spots 11/5.
Choppy water when the wind picked up. Sand blowing and umbrellas flying as well.
Makena is my favorite beach. Beautiful sand and views. I was disappointed you had to pay to park your car and per head to visit. Port-o-potties and no lifeguard on premises. It can be a dangerous beach so be careful
